Will was already to follow Gyan at the mention of the chocobo. He had no doubts that the man was only bringing it up to get away from their strange company (people did it when he was alone and he was sure Evvie and Vynce would only make it worse), but he loved animals, and he didn’t know what chocobos were… But when Evelyn beat him down into the bowels of the boat, almost treading on Gyan’s heels, Will stopped, turned around, and threw himself down in a pile of sacking close to Vyncent. He was intuitive enough to see that Evelyn didn’t like him very much, and if Gyan wanted to get away from their company it probably wasn’t appropriate for more than half of their little group to follow him down.
So Will lay there and looked alternately at Vyncent and the sky. As it happened, neither of them were particularly interesting – the sky was practically cloudless, and Vyncent’s expression was equally empty. Will closed his eyes, listening as he sometimes did (when there was nothing much better to do) to the sounds of the world around him quietly going around his business. There was something, though, that rather quickly caught his ears.
It was like faint singing, very far away. It waxed, and waned, but it never truly went away, and as soon as he tried to focus on it he lost it entirely. Somehow, in the corner of his mind, a pocket of information told him what it was – it was the aura of magic in the air. He’d never heard it this way before though… perhaps it was something exciting, and interesting! He pulled himself up, nodding silently at Vyncent, and wandered over to the rail as goose bumps tingled up and down his arms. Vyncent was right – he could see it in the water, like faint shimmers caught in the corners of his eyes.
“They’re big ones,” he said, but he didn’t know where the words came from. “They’re close… very close.” The music intensified as he focussed on the faint trails of the elementals. There was something he was missing… but what was it?

Gyan looked up acidly at the girl. How dare she, actually label him as some pig who could care less about these creatures. If anything could piss him off, doubting his friendship with his own chocobo would be it.
He stood up defensivley and said "Fenrir is my best friend. He gets seasick so put him down here so he wouldn't see the water moving. I came down here to see if he was allright and if he wanted some air," he was interuppted by the large black bird beginning to stand up. Fenrir had to keep his head ducked down from hitting the ceiling, and he pressed his beak against Gyans back, cooing slightly to try and calm his friend down.
Gyan closed his eyes again for a second and re-opened them. "Now, if you'll excuse me" he said, pushing past the girl and retreiving his saddle, which he returned and put on the bird. He reached into the belt across his chest and pulled out an apple, feeding it to the chocobo who ate it happily and clucked. Gyan smiled, pat his friend on the neck, and put the bridle around his beak, turning to lead the bird back above decks, but the girl was in the way.
"Anything else?" he asked, doing his best to keep his cool.

She quite easily dare say whatever she liked to him, it wasn't as if she was defenceless if he took her interrogation the wrong way and she had a right to ensure that her fellow animals were being treat right. She wouldn't have been able to settle on the ship without finding out whether that animal was being kept against its will, and if she did find out that the chocobo was being mistreat then her full attentions would be on attempting to free the creature. It was only natural for someone with Evelyn's background to be touchy about such things.
She folded her arms over her chest as he spoke, irritation in her eyes. She didn't like his tone, not one little bit. However, what he actually said made her whole mood seemed to change, the shifter smiling at him brightly, all sense of threat fading away from her now. The chocobo seemed happy enough, and the sharp indignation in his voice told that he wasn't lying to her. "Oh well, I suppose that is alright then." Her tone was oddly bright and cheerful, though Evelyn still remained in their way.
"Can I come with you? I've never seen a creature like that...and I like animals. I promsie to be good." She told him, pouting ever so slightly, that childlike innocence shinging through again now.

"Mm... I know." Vyncent agreed with the boy, crimson eyes narrowing as he gazed into the water, the ringing in his ears (or singing, as Will heard it) intensifying and causing the demon to look up, towards the prow of the boat. The magic fight had to be pretty close by now, but he didn't like the idea of these water elementals being equally as close. "Just hope they don't decide to come and say hello." he murmured, "I don't think they're the friendly type." he glanced over his shoulder as if wondering where Evelyn had gone; it was becoming somewhat of a habit, to make sure he knew where she was. Was she still below deck?
His eyes narrowed as he turned his gaze back to the water, able to make out the very faint outline of an elemental that had just passed under the boat, in the deep water. Oh, so they were that close. He didn't think they'd have time to avoid them at this rate, it would end up with a fight no doubt. At least that had been a relatively small one, as far as he could make out. With a sigh Vyncent turned from the railing to walk further into the centre of the deck. The safest place to be in his opinion, he was NOT being thrown into the water, not today thank you very much. "You any good with magic?" he asked Will lightly.
The shimmer of magic was already beginning to emanate from him as well, very faint in the air as he muttered to himself. Thunder, lightning, Gyan had suggested. He didn't need to be told twice, Vyncent's eyes closing as the crackle of electricity snaked over his skin once, twice. He wasn't going to use it yet, but this was a security measure. 'Just in case' played a big part in Vyncent's life.

The faint singing intensified, and Will closed his eyes. If he listened closely, he could single out the individual threads of music; they no longer snuck away from him when he tried to pin them down. Slowly, he realised that each of the ethereal voices came from one source of magic… it had to be the elementals. He listened to them drift in the water around them, beneath them. He wondered if Vyncent know they were that close. He had to, surely – he had felt them before Will had – but what about Evelyn and Gyan, still below deck? He didn’t feel any special attachment to them, but it was better that they were forewarned… Oh well; somebody else could take care of that.
“No,” Will replied affably. “I don’t have much of it myself – my magic comes from the small folk, and most of it is just twined all over the place to keep me from stubbing my toes.” His illusion was decent, but his destructive magic was a minor affair. He didn’t like hurting people, not unless bitter Will was about, so he wasn’t sure of its extent, but he knew he couldn’t take on even a single water elemental. He could see if he could borrow the strength of his adopted parents… but that had only worked twice in the past – both with unfortunately destructive end results – and they hadn’t been very happy with him. Vyncent would definitely be better off that he was – minus the fear part, which Will seemed to lack completely. On the contrary, he thought the whole thing sounded like an exciting game. A spark jumped from one fingertip to the other as he – unlike Vyncent – moved closer to the side of the boat. From there, Will could see them clearly, as dark shadows in the deep water. They circled slowly, lazily, their shapes flowing from one to the next with gentle, fluid majesty. It was hard to imagine them as violent, angry – beneath the water, they seemed as peaceful as whales… But even whales could sink ships and drown people. “They’re beautiful,” he murmured quietly, his words dying easily in the cool air. But nonetheless, he had to prepare himself to fight them. His hair fluttered gently in a breeze that wasn’t there and he closed his eyes and reached deep within him for the familiar, icy burn of the magic that wasn’t his.

Gyan nodded and led his chocobo past the hall, and up the stairs. When they got to the top, Fenrir cooed and spread his wings. Gyan smiled and climbed upon his back, seating himself upon the saddle.
The chocobo was very used to the weight of Gyan and his armor and (actually being more comforted with the weight) had no problem. Gyan gave a little "hup hup" and the chocobo walked out onto the deck, sailors and servants getting out of the way and such.
Gyan looked over at Vincent and the other man and asked "Are either of you very good at long-range combat? Because I really falter with it," he confessed, leading his friend back closer to the group.
Fenrir was very precious to Gyan, so Gyan had armor fitted to his friend that shone as well as his own now that it was in the sunlight. Armor on his legs, up his neck, chain mail dangled about a foot off of his saddle and a helmet on that went down the front of his forhead, leaving the sides of his face exposed. His tail feathers stuck up tall and elogent, and Gyan was proud. He truley was.

Evelyn literally hopped back up the steps onto the deck, her cheerful bounce having returned to her step as she skipped across the deck to join Vycent, stopping next to him to spread her fingers out as if they were claws, her pupils thinning out into slits as she smirked at him. "Rawr!" Ok...so she was definatly in a playful mood, the shifter giggling happily. Well, that was a mood swing from earlier wasn't it, the little shifter unable to do inbetween emotions. Everything was polarized in her world, happy or sad, right or wrong, good or bad, it was all split apart simply in her head. Shades of grey would just confuse her, and a confused Evelyn usualy ended up angry and murderous.
She glanced back up at Gyan as he spoke, shaking her head a little in response to his question. She was no good at long distance combat, Evelyn more suited to close up fighting seeing as she didn't use weapons. She did, however, seem rather bemused as she studied the chocobo, in the light the creature seeming far too...shiny to be real. Animals wore armour? She had never seen such a thing before, which caused her to tug on Vyncent's sleeve lightly and whisper to him. "Why's it all metal Vynce? Are those it's feathers?"

"They're deadly. And they're close." Vyncent murmured over his shoulder to Will's exclamation at the creatures' beauty; perhaps deadly was a bit much, but then a water elemental near a fire demon would probably have pretty destructive results for both parties involved.
He glanced up as Gyan and Evelyn returned to the deck, eyes flitting over the chocobo as he did so. Wonderful, animals didn't tend to like him, he could only hope the thing wasn't skittish and overly sensitive to demons... he didn't need that right now. Unable to resist a smirk at Evelyn as she 'rawred' at him, the demon lifted a hand, still charged with the subdued lightning, letting the sparks dance over his fingertips as he formed it into a playful claw to growl back at her. Well, he wasn't in that bad of a mood anymore considering that there were monsters lurking under the boat currently, and he was still on the water. Perhaps it was the idea of a fight to come; nothing cheered him up more.
He turned a little at Gyan's question, nodding lightly and lowering his spark-covered hand. "I can use magic up to a certain point, but I don't know how long it will last." he informed him, "And I'm not even going to try fire, not on the water. So I suppose until I can't cast anymore, I'm good for long-range combat." he murmured with a shrug. He was really suited for any type of combat - when the magic ran out, he'd call up the demon fire, and if that failed he could always rely on Amor. Lucky really that he was so easily distracted and careless, God forbid if he actually focused on something for an extended period of time and decided to use his skills for something important.
His attention was drawn back to Evelyn at the mentioning of the chocobo, the demon only actually noticing the armour it was clad with now that she'd mentioned it. It was quite beautiful, really. "That's armour, Evelyn." he told her softly, "Its feathers are black, the metal is to protect it." he explained, glancing down to the deck uncertainly as he felt one of the elementals glide beneath them. "They're even closer now." he muttered, frowning lightly.

Will watched, mesmerised, as the dark shapes glided smoothly through the water below their ship. They could destroy it, he realised, and they wouldn’t care at all. It was just how they were; eerily beautiful (at least while beneath the water), but as destructive as a flood or tidal wave. They would kill without thought, without even noticing. He leant even further forward over the railing, drinking in the sight of them as their ethereal song rang in his ears. How easy it would be to slip off, to dive in to swim with them forever…
Will tore his eyes away from the water. Clearly, at least for him, even thinking about the elementals for too long was a risk. Instead, he scanned both banks for any sight of the magicians. He couldn’t see them: perhaps the fight was already over? Both magicians could already be dead… But then why were the elementals still about? Could they still hold their shape without the magical energy of a wizard caging them in it? Maybe they were already caged, and with the magicians dead, they’d lost their key… Content that he’d given himself enough to think about, Will now focussed on his magic.
He knew that it was only a matter of time before they attacked: if they were, as he’d decided, trapped in their shapes, they wouldn’t be pleased. “Nope,” he said happily in response to Gyan’s question. “I’m not good at any sort of combat. I just try to stay alive.” He smiled, but then his face closed as he unlocked his magic. It flowed through his veins like ice, chilling and invigorating, rough and tender, painful and soothing. Electricity crackled in his hair and clothes, and green fire smouldered in his eyes. It looked impressive – that was one of his talents – but the reality of his offensive skill was quite another thing. He just hoped he’d be able to provide enough of a deterrent without overly aggravating the elementals.

"Well, that really leaves Vyncent and Fenrir who can handle the elementals. Common sense says that blades and melee combat wont affect these things," he explained more to the slowly gathering ship crew then to the three newcommers.
He suddenly felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up, and Fenrir turned around at the sound of a loud minotaur horn sounding a battlecry only too known to Gyan. Pirates.
There were two vessels. Not as grand as the corsair, but with black sails and all the tell-tale signes of piracy about . What they were doing here, he wasn't sure.
"Well, it looks like we've got more then magic to worry about," He muttered to Fenrir. The chocobo gave itself a shake and cooed back. "Allright!" he shouted over the crew who were half panicking and half arming themselves from the ships about 100 yards away. Gyan reached down at his side and drew a long and handsome claymore six feet and five inches long. He held the weapon aloft to the side with one hand, gripping Fenrir's reigns with the other.
"We've got more company then we bargained for," he began. "For the ones who don't know how to fight or aren't very good at it, stick to keeping the boat afloat. Patch the sails, try to repair ship damage, and try to keep the cannons below decks running and in top shape," He called out.
Fenrir stepped about expectantly as the ships closed in.

Evelyn couldn't help but giggle as Vyncent 'rawred' back at her, the shifter seeming totally unaffected by the threat posed by the water elementals. In fact, she seemed more interested in looking down at her hand, flexing her fingers, as if wondering to herself how the demon had made the lightening crackle around his fingertips like that, pouting a little as she couldn't work out how he'd done that. She would have to get him to teach her, even if it meant enduring lessons on words and numbers as well. He had promised her that he would teach her some magic, she would have to pester him soon to remind him of his promise.
"Armour?" She arched an eyebrow as her gaze flickered back up to the chocobo, tilting her head to the side a little. "Oh..." No, she sounded neither impressed nor understanding of this. Then again, Evelyn was rather judgemental of people wasn't she, juding people by her own standards. Then again, her opinion on things changed so quickly that you need not worry what her first impression of you was because five minutes later she might have completly changed her mind.
"Pirates? Yay! I like pirates." She was actually smiling brightly as her attention moved to th black sailed ships, taking a moment or two to realise why everyone was scrambling around and arming themselves. Oh, the pirates were going to attack them. Tsk, naughty pirates, it wasn't as if there looked to be much to steal ffrom this boat, they would be better just sailing on by and finding another victim. She sighed heavily as her hands moved to sit on her hips, looking up at Vyncent again now. "How am I supposed to know who are pirates and who are people from this ship?" She questioned in an annoyed tone, shaking her hair back out of her eyes. "I don't think they'll be very happy if I just killed everyone, maybe I should just sit and watch?"

"I like pirates too..." Vyncent smirked, though it looked almost like a grimace, the blood-lust that stirred beneath the crimson of his eyes making them gleam as he glanced up across to the black-sailed ships. "But not in the same way you do." he murmured to Evelyn, his spark-covered hand moving to grasp the hilt of Amor, the demon stepping forwards just behind Gyan, seeming to cheer at the opportunity to rid the river of both water elementals and worthless pirates. This is nothing, he told himself arrogantly, forget about the water under you, that you are a fire demon. This is easy, nothing to it. Hah!
He couldn't help but glance at Gyan as the armour-clad man drew his claymore; he didn't really look at weapons as such unless it was the black-bladed rapier at his side, but he had to admit it was a rather handsome weapon. He glanced over his shoulder at Evelyn as she spoke again, that demonic little grin moving over his features for the first time since they'd gotten onto the water - clearly he was getting quite good at convincing himself to abandon his fear. "Evelyn. When have you ever cared whether you were killing pirates or ordinary people?" he asked her, and then slid the rapier from its sheath, the demon-sword glinting and singing its eerie, ethereal song as it was exposed to the light. Sparks snaked up the length of the blade from the magic coarsing over his fingertips, lending the sword its strength... not that Amor needed any extra strength.
Vyncent felt the boat lurch a little from the elementals that lurked below it, frowning and focusing his gaze only on the ships in front of them. Ugh, damn those elementals! The demon couldn't help watching as Will unlocked his magic, the sign that he was mildly impressed shown only with a vague glitter in his eyes. "Perhaps you'll be able to help us after all." Even though the boy may not actually be able to do much damage, the pirates wouldn't really realise that, would they? He half hoped some of them would recognise him and be smart enough to stay out of his way anyway, that just made it easier. Although really, today he was hindered just as much as he was given an advantage.

Will turned to watch interestedly as the pair of pirate ships cut their way cleanly through the water. He found himself wondering what would happen if they were to run over the elementals - the ships of the pirates in particular seemed like they had sharp keels. Would they - could they? - be cut in half? He decided the answer was no. They were water, and you couldn't cut water in half. They'd just be able to flow around the ships... He turned his attention back. Their ships seemed nicer than the one they were on, at least in appearance. They were sleeker and seemed to cut through the water effortlessly, whereas theirs was slightly more barge-like. But from the way the pirates' deck leant so alarmingly when they turned, he supposed it would be harder work... maybe when all the fighting was over, he could hitch a ride? After a few seconds, he reconsidered. After all the fighting was over, he'd be dead, or they would be... Or they would all have perished, and their bodies would fall to the mercy of the river. It would be a good place to die, but he didn't think he felt quite ready enough for death yet.
So when the battle came in outright, where should the boy direct his attentions? Will glanced first at the elementals, then at the pirates and finally at Vyncent. The elementals seemed to be the greatest threat; pirates were people, flesh and blood. The elementals were… well, they were something else entirely, and he didn’t feel like he’d be able to do much more than harass them. As for the glance at Vyncent… Will felt Vyncent seemed more in control of things than anybody else. Gyan he barely knew at all – he doubted he’d said more than five words to him – and Evelyn seemed too wild and unpredictable. Vyncent was more reliable, and Will had slowly begun to defer to his judgement in these matters. Besides which, Vyncent was apparently really old, and Will knew already how much fighting he liked to do. So it was to Vyncent that his next question was addressed.
“Which one?” he asked quietly. The meaning was clear – pirates or elementals? The pirates seemed like less of a danger, but they couldn’t be ignored… but then, perhaps Vyncent wanted his help with the elementals? He didn’t know what to do.

Fenrir reared back and cawed loudly. Gyan shouted "Allright, lets send the scum back to their holes!" He shouted, gripping his claymore tighter with one hand, the reins of his chocobo with the other.
The ships pulled up at the front and the back, swinging over by ropes tied to their masts. How cliché.
Fenrir opened his mouth and squawked, balls of orange fire about the size of tennis balls rocketing forward, exploding on contact and sending the river rats to the ground. Speeding forward, Gyan swung his blade, cleaving cleanly through the greasy theives who fought with tooth and nail.
The crewmen werent ametures, and shot back with black powder pistols and long sabers. Each crew member had on a bright white and blue uniform, making them easy to distinguish.
Gyan spun the blade back and forth, from side to side, keeping the bandits off of his chocobo as the onyx black bird shot them down with Choco Pellets.
Gyan opened his mouth, a bloodlust having glazed over his eyes. A loud, vicous battlecry spurt from his lungs as he and Fenrir jumped about the ship, cutting down wave after wave of scum. The verocity was encouraging the crewmen who cheered and helped push the river rats back.
Gyan reached out and grabbed a pirate by the lower jaw, and with a vicious yank, tore it from the man who's tongue lolled out and he screamed in pain. He was so lost in fighting the increasing numbers that he had forgotten about the three he had left to their own devices.
His armor chinked loudly and glistened with his movement, but he was so used to the weight it was like a second layer of skin. every knife stab, pistol ball and sword cleave dented, scratched, and bruised the armor, but the flesh inside of it would only experiance bruises, and was so pumped with adrenaline that the pain was invisible to him.

"Well...they might get mad at me if I start killing the crew by mistake... and there isn't very many places to hide on a boat. I would have to fly away and leave you and I would be rather peeved if I had to leave you." She pouted to him and folded her arms over her chest. "I am sure that you don't want the boat people chasing us off, you know, seeing as they're the only thing between us and the water." She poked her tongue out at Vyncent before shaking her head. She wasn't really in very much of a murderous mood really, she just wanted to sit and watch to tell the truth. She didn't think that the crew had much of a chance of winning anyway, pirates were good fighters and probably better prepared than this crew, plus there were two ship loads of them. Evelyn refused to be on the losing side, maybe she would join in when she was sure who was going to win...but really neither side had done anything to annoy her, so why should she bother? Vyncent was really the only person she felt any loyalty toward, and maybe Will, but other than that why should she fight for someone else?
She wandered away from Vyncent as he and Will started discussing the elementals again, perching herself upon a barrell, running her fingers through her hair as she hummed to herself happily. She really had no sense of panic about this whole situation, did she? She even seemed mildly amused as her gaze trailed after Gyan and his Chocobo. She had never seen an animal that could do anything like that before, other than a dragon and she hadn't really seen one of those, and she was starting to think that shifting into something like Fenir would take far too much energy. The bird was big as it was, which always made things harder, but the magic the chocobo had would make that shift even harder. No, she would stick to her favourites and save tricky shifts like that for sticky situations.
