Needless to say Vyncent's grip on the side of the boat had turned his knuckles white when Will jumped aboard, tilting the little vessel dangerously and causing a low growl to unwittingly bubble up from his throat. Fear, hatred, an intolerance, call it what you liked, but if he had to stay in this... thing for longer than was absolutely necessary there would be hell to pay. He sighed a little as the bank became further and further away, realising now that there was no chance of escape. The boat turned instantly to be caressed by the current, drifting now at a steady pace with the Great River flowing steadily beneath it, keeping it on its track.
The demon glanced up to see the villagers finally arrive at the little docking point, allowing himself a very faint smile when they saw the boat drift out of sight. Now THAT was something he wasn't sad to be leaving behind. He kept his eyes pinned on the horizon now, for any sign of land or a town or city, anything to keep him occupied and stop him from losing his mind completely. A fire demon? On water? Not a fun idea. It was disturbing how his and Will's views of the same place could be so conflicting. To Vyncent the water was a menace, something that should be avoided at all costs. But to Will it was friend, peace, everything good. Needless to say he should keep that particular view to himself, or Vyncent may need to try and 'persuade' him otherwise.
Will's words drifted to him very faintly, dragging him from his determined trance of ignoring the Great River. Adventure? Pfft, this wasn't an adventure to him, Vyncent was just... well, living. "Exciting isn't the exact word I'd use to describe the future." he commented in a low voice, unable to be angry right now with the blatant danger of water rushing around him on all sides. "Maybe deadly... dangerous... no, more like omnious. A more omnious future."
He glanced down at Evelyn then, seeing her creeping towards him out of the corner of his eye, and wondering what the hell she was doing. He quirked an eyebrow, this momentarily distracting him enough so he could lift his foot a few inches from the boat, as if to make out that it was alive and wouldn't take kindly to being pounced at.

Will smiled, but withheld a giggle, as Vyncent gripped the side of the boat harder. It was good to know he had some way of bothering his obviously much stronger companion of sorts. It was really quite funny that for all his strength, Vyncent was afraid of something so harmless and material as the water. It wouldn’t do to press the matter, though. He could always jump into the water if Vyncent decided to retaliate, Will decided, but it would be better to stay in the boat. He was sure Vynce wouldn’t follow, and he could float well enough, but the boat was still infinitely preferable.
And when neither of them were particularly murderous, his motley crewmates weren’t all that bad as travelling companions. Sure, he wasn’t likely to strike up a conversation, but if Vynce and Evelyn – now beautifully cat-shaped – remained quiet, he could almost imagine that they were his friends, and he was drifting away to somewhere exciting and different with a strong wind at his back and brilliant sunshine stretching out to greet him.
Then Vyncent spoke, dispelling the illusion well and truly. Will frowned.
“Vyncent,” he complained with a potentially risky familiarity, “exciting is better than ominous. Dangerous is exciting, deadly’s alright, but ominous is bad. Ominous is bad for us, and I don’t like bad for us.” He stuck out his tongue childishly.
It was strange, perhaps, that the word ominous was the exact word he would have used to describe the future when he had first seen that strange cloud drifting lethargically above town. Now, when he was alongside the creators of all that destruction – one of whom had severely injured him – he didn’t feel worried at all, just excited. But the irony of it all went over Will’s head completely as he gazed forward, his green eyes properly happy for the first time in what seemed like forever.

But the fact that his foot was alive made it all the more fun to pounce at, of course. However, pouncing wasn't quite as fun when your victim knew what you were planning on doing, hence a change of plan. Evelyn mewed at Vyncent rather cutely as she stretched out where she was stood, almost seeming to be playing a game as she rolled over onto her back and wriggled around in a very feline manner, purring as she stretched her paws up toward him, as if demanding that he amuse her. Well, she was trapped on a little boat and was in a mischievious and playful mood, someone would have to amuse her or she would just end up causing trouble. Ha! She could play innocent until he tutted and shook his head at her and then she could resume her clever plot to pounce at his foot. Ahhh, she was a little genius sometimes wasn't she?
The little shifter seemed to hold neither fear nor love for the water, for her the Great River being nothing more than wet. If she fell in then it was her own silly fault and she would have to be a fish for a while. She couldn't actaually recall ever spending any time as a fish anyway, and she was sure that she would make a rather charming one. In fact, she could be the prettiest fish in the river!
Yes, her attention had been quickly distracted away from her previously violent thoughts, Evvie back to her innocent and cheerful self once more, not even seeming to notice that the scent of blood still hung around Will. She didn't feel guilty for what she had done to him, he deserved it after all, and she wouldn't apologise, but she did wish that he would hurry up and heal beacuse him walking around with mangled shoulders would probably get them a few strange looks; and yes, it seemed that she had accepted that he would be joining them now, not choosing to talk to him but deciding to ignore him and his nasty little conncent earlier...but if he did something like that agaiun she was likely to rip his tongue out.

"Omnious may be bad but I can assure you it's a completely accurate description of our future." Yes, it seemed Vyncent also seemed to have accepted that Will would be travelling with them, although for how long was unclear to the demon. For the moment he was still intent on exacting some kind of revenge for having Will wreck his illusion and making them leave Valley Town so soon - he could really have used another day or so to check exactly where those nobles had gotten to. But as for now, on the water where there was no escape, he supposed he would just have to adapt to their new companion's somewhat overly positive and excitable attitude. It was surprising how cooperative Vyncent could be when you actually managed to threaten him with something. "If you haven't noticed," he continued, "Your irritating little sprites have shattered any chance of an illusion that I can make, so the next time we're spotted it's going to be fight or die. Fight is fine for me, but I'm not going to elaborate as to how many are going to die if I get wet." he turned back to face the water again, the current beneath them picking up ever-so-slightly, suggesting they were now being pulled further downstream.
"So omnious is a pretty accurate description." He glanced down at Evelyn again as she mewed at him, seeming to find her a suitable distraction for him as was shown when he actually managed to turn his back on the water and sit (very slowly and carefully, by the way) onto the deck of the little vessel next to the sprawling shape-shifter. He dangled his left hand a little way above her paws absently, his fingers dancing enticingly as his gaze focused on the slowly shrinking mass on the side of the river that might have been the edge of Valley Town, or perhaps the villagers making an unsuccessful chase on them. He didn't really care to make much of it - they'd be long gone before anyone managed to find them... hopefully. Then he pushed his hand back through his hair again and sighed, crimson-eyed gaze flitting this time to the sky which was beginning to hold hints of pink and orange. Night on the water... how fun.
"So... you call yourself Thistle? I find it hard to believe that's your given name, you look a little too human for that." he mused loud enough for Will to hear, referring to when they'd first exchanged words, Will speaking in that riddle-like fashion. Yes, Vyncent did seem to be making small talk for lack of anything better to do. That, and as much as he hated admitting it, the boy was rather interesting to him - he'd heard of the Eternal Children, vaguely and in passing, but he'd heard of them. And, like most others he thought they didn't exist, typically.

Will glanced as the sprites, still on the wing and chasing after one another in dizzying spirals around his head. There were fewer than he’d had to begin with, after Vyncent’s relatively mild retribution and the madcap dash through the city. They were faster than he was, but if they got too excited it wouldn’t be hard to imagine them getting lost. But the main thing was that Will just couldn’t see why Vyncent didn’t like them. They had destroyed his illusion, and sent the villagers of the town after them, but Vyncent and Evelyn hadn’t gotten hurt… No, just him. Had Vyncent wanted to stay in Valley Town after all? Will wrinkled his nose – he couldn’t see why.
“They can go away if you want them to,” he said after a while. It was strange – or not – how cooperative Will could be, too, when the situation called for it. As it was, he didn’t want to get hurt any more. He was more than certain Vyncent was capable of injuring him badly, and the pain from his mangled shoulders had begun to tear at the unhuman barrier he had erected in his mind with vicious, agonising swipes. But at least Vyncent’s question offered distraction, and Will leapt at the opportunity.
“I don’t call myself Thistle,” he replied obliquely. “I call myself ‘me’. Other people call me Thistle.” He cocked his head to the side contemplatively, doing his best to ignore the savage spasm of pain in his shoulder. “I did used to be human,” he said, an earnest, slightly apologetic expression on his face though. “I don’t think I am anymore though.”

Evelyn wasn't listening to the conversation between Vyncent and Will, much happier not to be part of this mundane little conversation; it wasn't as if she could join in anyway seeing as cats couldn't speak. No, Evelyn was far too busy to be listening to them anyway, emerald eyes gleaming as she watched Vyncent's hand carefully. Ohhh, his hand was just asking to be attacked, wasn't it? Dangling and wiggling there like that, how very dare it? It was just taunting her, wasn't it? Teasing her beacuse she was all the way down on the floor and it as just hanging there...and it was so wiggly! She simply had to capture it!
Evelyn almost seemed to have forgotten than the hand belonged to Vyncent, stretching out to swipe her paw at one of his fingers as it drew closer to her, though her claws were hidden away so the gesture was practically harmless. She also snapped her jaw at him, a sure sign that Evvie was in a playful mood, mewing at him in an excitable fashion as her tail flicked over the rough deck of the boat. There, the little cat was happy, stretching up to attempt to capture Vyncent's hand, rather enjoying the attention really, even if he was concentrating on Will.
However, one thing that Will said suddenly seemed to drag her attention away from her game, ear flicking as she looked over at the boy, seeming bemused all of a sudden. 'I did used to be human. I don't think I am anymore'. How very...odd. Her feline features actually seemed to frown as she hopped to her feet, creeping over toward Will as if she were suspicious and curious about him all over again. She mewed to him as she stopped in front of him, as if to tell him that you couldn't change what you were born as, that just couldn't happen.

"If you can make them go away, why didn't you do that in the first place?" Vyncent asked, mild annoyance undertoning his voice. Whether Will used to be human or not, he clearly still had a child's way of thinking most of the time. "I didn't ENJOY running like hell through Valley Town, you know. I doubt you did either, and we wouldn't have had to if it hadn't been for those sprites... and you of course." he muttered, folding his arms when Evelyn wandered off and closing his eyes, leant back against the side of the little boat.
"I don't really want to call you Thistle. What do you propose we do about that?" he asked in a lower, less agitated tone, clearly already tiring from their adventure on the Great River, and probably wanting to sleep before he had to think anymore about the water rushing away beneath them. Thistle... it sounded too much like a name you'd give to... well, one of the fey. Pfft, it didn't sound right on his tongue, much in the way that his own name hadn't sounded right to Evelyn. His eyes opened when Will spoke of being human once, mild amusement in his gaze. There was even a light smile on his face through the twilight, as though he'd said something funny.
"You should be happy about not being human anymore. They're disgusting, useless creatures, only good for being manipulated." he shrugged, "Glad I never was one."
Vyncent's view on the world was so positive, wasn't it? To him, the world was simply a playground, and humans were mere toys for him to play with, get bored with and eventually dispatch. Explained why he didn't tend to 'get on' well with others. Disregarding Evelyn, of course. But Evelyn wasn't exactly human, and she wasn't exactly sane. Just what Vyncent liked in a person.

William frowned, his thin eyebrows drawing together. Vyncent’s questions were getting tiresome, and he really wanted to sleep. The sun was going down! But for the moment, it seemed like it would be diplomatic – not to mention safe – to oblige.
“I didn’t know you had an illusion up, did I?” he asked, in a tone of mild exasperation. “You had an illusion up – to me, you just looked like everybody else. So when the sprites ate it, it was too late to do anything at all. And the running wasn’t too bad – Valley Town’s not all that grate anyway.” He crossed his arms in a self satisfied manner, but apparently Vyncent hadn’t finished. “I don’t want to call you ‘Vyncent Schwarz’ either, do I?” Will retorted politely, exaggerating the Märmosian pronunciation of the name. “It’s too hard to say.” He paused, but his need for safety overtook his rebelliousness. “You can call me ‘Will’” he said finally. “People used to call me Will.” He didn’t understand Victor’s dislike of the name Thistle. It was just a name – no, it was his name. There was nothing wrong with it, was there?
“Humans are nice sometimes,” Will said eventually. It was a complicated issue. On one hand, most humans didn’t like him, viewing him as a twisted human-fey amalgamation. On the other hand, he had been human once… and sometime, decades back in the fog his memory had become, he had loved humans as family. He tweaked the rudder – the boat slid easily around a half-submerged rock. Here, where the Great River wasn’t so commonly travelled, it hadn’t been cleared of underwater obstacles. One had to be careful. “Why would you want to manipulate people?” he asked after a time. “It doesn’t seem particularly exciting.”

He was...ignoring her!?!?! How dare he ignore her? The silly boy called her awful, nasty names and then ignored her when she spoke to him, or mewed at him, but both of those accounted to the same thing in her mind. He was just being plain rude now, she should rip one of his arms off just to teach him a lesson. Strange children, they just had no manners at all anymore, and she couldn't help but wander who on earth would want to spawn such vile little things? That was beyond her. Children, bleh. Who would ever want to be a child? All vulnerable and defenceless so that everyone can take advantage of you, where was the fun in that? She hated being a child, though that was possibly something to do with the fact that her own childhood had been stolen away by slavery, which also explained why she was so childish now.
She hissed at Will to show her annoyance, scarlet fur bristling as she turned her back on him, stalking back over to Vyncent. She liked Vynce, he was her friend, unlike that nasty boy that had decided to trail along with them. She didn't like him, and she told Vynce this by snapping her jaw at his hand in an annoyed manner, rubbing her head against his leg lightly as she stalked around to sit behind his leg with her backl to Will, as if to demonstrate her dislike for the boy.

Vyncent wrinkled his nose as Will gave that Märmosian edge to his name, though he didn't look over at the child. As proud as he was meant to have been of his father; the notorious Märmosian bastard demon that he was, he was born of Avalas, and he wouldn't have any inclination otherwise. Besides, (in mostly his own opinion) he couldn't seem half as charming without that charismatic Avalan accent, not by a long shot.
It seemed he too was beginning to tire as darkness fell slowly, almost lazily over the Great River, his eyes lighting up briefly like fire when the red of the sunset rolled over the little boat. Ugh, sleeping on the water? A fun idea, if your idea of fun was unbridled repulsion. "Will." he murmured to himself, tilting his head towards the deck of the vessel, silvery hair falling slightly over his face. "Very well. You are Will." he murmured - perhaps it was because he was getting sleepy he was being so dismissive of everything, either way it put him in a rather negotiable mood.
A smirk tugged at the edges of his mouth when Evelyn snapped at his hand, the high demon not even flinching; she changed moods so easily, it would be mentally exhausting for mortals to be around her for too long. She certainly could be difficult to keep up with. He ran his hand fleetingly over the top of her head as if to show that he wasn't going to ignore her, sighing and settling back comfortably against the boat. "Aw, poor Evelyn. Stuck on this cramped little hell-ship, and being ignored. Not too fun, I think." he murmured.

Will watched Evelyn stalk back towards Vyncent with a mixture of irritation and amusement. On one hand, pain had made him short-tempered and he was getting sick of her attitude. It seemed everything he did annoyed her – and what had she wanted him to say in that situation, anyway? He would have felt stupid talking to a cat, and he had gotten the impression that petting Evelyn would not be a good idea. On the other hand, despite everything else, it was amusing how childish she could be sometime.
But she was only half right – Will was a child, but he was not defenceless and vulnerable. “Evelyn,” he said finally, in a measured voice, “if you attack me again, I will destroy the boat.” He crossed his arms, but his eyes were nervous – and on Vyncent. He knew that if he got the demon wet, his retribution would be terrible… but hopefully he might be cross enough with Evelyn too to discourage her from making a move in the first place.
And then, after a pause; “Sorry, I suppose.” And he was, in an oblique kind of way. When he put himself in her shoes – or paws, maybe – he realised he didn’t much like being ignored either.

Evelyn was childish and she was mentally exhausting to keep up with, but that's what defined her as a person. It was all just part of her charm really, and like it or not she probably wasn’t going to change any time soon. Vyncent didn’t seem to have any problem with how she acted, so Will certainly shouldn’t. In fact, he had no right to dislike her because she disliked him first. Yes, that was right. The silly little boy should stay away from her before she tore his throat out and threw it into the river.
She was sulking as she flopped down on the wooden deck next to Vynce, giving a shake of her head to confirm that being stuck on this Hell ship and being ignored was not any fun at all. She would much rather Will just disappear so that it was just her and the demon again and everything would just be alright again. She rested her head on her front paws, almost seeming to scowl as her emerald gaze lingered on the child for a moment or two before flickering up to Vynce, purring ever so slightly as if to keep his attention. She didn’t like being ignored, not one little bit. What was the point in being around people if they ignored her? She might as well still be bounding around the mountain on her own, still fending for herself.
Her gaze snapped back to Will as he spoke, or rather threatened her, that deadly growl rumbling up from within her chest as her fur bristled again, a wave of agitation washing over her. He was threatening her? He had ignored her and now he was threatening her? How dare he? She really had been rather patient with him, and she hadn’t hurt him too much. He was the one who had started the fight in the first place with his acid tongue and now he was threatening her? Stupid child, she really should teach him what pain was. She should make him scream and rip out his tongue so that his acidic words would never again leave his lips.
She was growing again as she rose to her feet, muscles tensed as she stalked forward, taking shape in her full tiger form before she had even taken a step. Malice glinted in her eyes, tail twitching back and forth as her claws splintered the wooden deck of the boat. The shifter only paused when he murmured his apology, seeming unsure as to whether that was enough or not. She would much rather make him sorry than he just say that he was sorry, then she could be sure that he meant it. But…she was uncertain.

Vyncent's savage snarl of annoyance tore through the air without any warning, the high demon's eyes gleaming like cold red gems through the dying light. The inhuman sound seemed rather unbecoming of the civilised mask he wore, revealing for a moment the ruthless thing, the terrible monster that lurked underneath. His teeth were bared, fangs and all, at both Evelyn and Will, as if they had both managed to get under his skin now and he'd had about enough. Enough for the moment of Will, though that was more because of the implication of the boat being destroyed than the boy himself, and enough of Evelyn, because her large paws could, at any moment, put little less than a finger's width between him and the water.
"Stop."
It was just one word, a deadly whisper in his velvet voice, but with all the malice and warning as if he'd screamed at them. His nails were biting into his palms with how tightly he was clenching his fists, and he flitted his gaze from them back to the water, as if checking if it had tried to leap into the boat with them.
Really, it wasn't surprising that he'd lost it - he'd been surprisingly good tempered these last few days, the anger was bound to come out eventually. In a way, it was probably just a reminder not to forget that he was the bad guy, not the hero, and he wouldn't babysit them while they squabbled.
"He apologised. That's the end of it." he growled.

Will couldn’t help but jerk in alarm as Vyncent snarled, the guttural noise ripping through the air like a saw. For a moment, he had almost forgotten who – or more importantly, what – Vyncent was, paying more attention to the nobleman façade than to what was lurking underneath. But even though he knew what Vyncent was – the sprites had helped with that – the sound still chilled him, and he did his best not to look scared. At least Vyncent’s clear display of displeasure should keep Evelyn from dismembering him any time soon. From Will’s perspective, it would be much easier on him if they could all just relax a bit.
If anything, the single word the demon whispered was even scarier. Will barely heard it, but it slid maliciously through his brain with the slick ease of a very sharp knife into something he’d rather not think about. He shivered just a tiny bit – but hopefully not enough for one of the others to notice. He, too, turned to look at the water, but not through fear. He stared at it because it was nice to look at, and because that way he wouldn’t be able to provoke Evelyn anymore... or vice versa.
After barely more than a second, Will had to move again. He yawned expansively, wincing as pain struck his shoulders, and stretched as much as the meagre amount of space would allow without disturbing the others. “I’m tired,” he murmured, almost to himself.

Evelyn seemed less shocked that Will, having witnessed the demonic side to Vyncent's personality before now. Plus she was more than used to being threatened, so she barely even battered an eyelid as he snarled. Vyncen't wasn't her master, nor her leader, no matter how much she allowed him to control things most of the time, and he couldn't tell her what to do. If she wanted to tear Will limb from limb and wreck the boat then she would do so, with or without the consent of Vyncent. He was her friend but that didn't mean that she was his puppet and that he could tweak her strings and get her to do what he wanted her to. Evelyn was wild, and she refused to be tamed.
However, she still held respect for the demon, which was probably the only reason that her ears flickered as he spoke, giving Will one last, deadly growl before snapping her teeth at him and turming around, tail whipping through the air angrily as she padded over to the barrel where the clothes were, just seeming to ignore Vynce as she went. She was annoyed with him, and when Evvie wanted she could be a very stubborn little shifter. Unless he did something to make her feel better then it was likely that she would be sulking for days, she may even disappear for a while and leave Will and Vynce to whatever they planned to do until she decided to find them again.
She shifted into a tiny, red mouse and scrambled up onto the top of the barrel, rooting around in her clothes for a long while before suddenly shifting back into her human form, having positioned her clothing so that she would grow into it as her human limbs formed. She was scowling intently as she straightened out her attire, plonking herself down to sit by the edge of the boat, as far away from the other two as she could get in this confined space. She huffed pointedly as she turned her back on them, smoothing out her hair before leaning against the side of the boat, letting her arm drape over so that her fingertips trailed through the cool, crystal water...almost as if just to taunt Vyncent and remind him that he was surrounded by the liquid.
