"You think? Thanks." She smiled a little as he told her that she had great aim, though she did't really seem convinced. Pari was a modest person, she would never admit to being good at anything. Plus, she had spent her whole life being compared to Dariyush and Layla, and they were far more acomplished than she would ever be. She was just used to living in their shadows, letting them recieve all the recognition. Layla had always been the pretty one, Dariyush the strong one, and she was the youngest. It was just how everything had worked out. Pari had always put her talents under the 'not bad but nothing special' catagory. Her aim was probably her best talent, unfortunatly for her, most at the Academy didn't regard it as being very important. It wasn't looked on with as high a regard as something like sword fighting or hand to hand combat was. They were seen to be more useful than being able to shoot.
"Yeah, eating may be a good idea." She nodded to him, pointing to the parcel of cloth in the shade of the tree next to him. "I brought you something when I went to the kitchen's, help yourself." She smiled before glancing down to the bow. She wasn't really used to people watching her. People only ever watched in lessons, and that made her nervous, and she was even more clumsy than usual when she was nervous. "Oh...probably since I was...twelve? It was the only thing that they would let me practice with the others. I wasn't accepted into the Academy until I was fifteen." She explained with a small shrug. "I prefer my throwing knives, but bows are for a longer distance...and there is a competition coming up." She added, rubbing at the back of her head. "Not sure if my father will let me compete, as part of my punishment, so I need to try extra hard."
At the moment, Pari wasn't quite sure how long her punishment for running away would last. So far, she knew that she wasn't allowed out of the Academy, and that she needed to be on her best behaviour. One more incident and her father had warned that he would take her out of the Academy and send her to the city to live with her sister. The mere threat of living with Layla was enough to put her on her best behaviour. Her father had also confiscated her knives, much to her annoyance. He knew that she wouldn't run away again without those, and she had no idea where he had hidden them, so they were at stale mate. She was stuck here.
She didn't want to linger on those thoughts, the girl shaking her head before selecting another arrow from the quiver, fitting it to the bow before turning back to her target. It took her a moment longer for her to take aim this time, Pari trying to ignore Kai's presence and block out her thoughts, focusing only on the target. Once she was ready, she released the arrow, smiling faintly as this too found it's way to the bullseye.
"Have the teachers mentioned anything to you about the competition, Kai? I wouldn't be surprised if they asked if you wanted to compete. It's only a little one, just a school competition. It's preparation for the big competition against another school in a couple of months."

He smiled to her in gratitude as she pointed to the cloth-wrapped parcel, lifting it into his lap as he settled back against the palm tree to watch her. He hadn't realised how hungry he was; did he always get this hungry at this time of the day? It was just because he was getting used to it, he assumed, this whole sleeping and eating thing. Before Kai knew it Pari would have him healthy, and then what was he going to do? Ahhh! He was smiling to himself as she hit the bullseye again, careful to make sure that he wasn't watching her at that moment, to stop her from getting distracted and doing it wrong. "Not 'til you were fifteen? Guess they were pretty reluctant, huh." he murmured after picking at the food - there was surprisingly little left, the half demon lifting a brow as if wondering where all of it could have possibly gone.
"Competition?" he tilted his head, placing the cloth back down beside him and rising slowly to his feet, stretching mightily. None of his limbs felt stiff for the first time in what felt like decades, and he was in pretty high spirits as he nodded across to Pari. "Baraki, that teacher I was fightin' with earlier, he told me about it. There are different categories, right?" he murmured; he had been getting pretty tired by the time this talk about a competition had begun, and so he was only vaguely aware of what was going on and what it was about. "I think he said he was gonna try and enter me into the hand-to-hand combat part of it... I just need to improve my style, or something like that." he shook his head, smiling a little. Personally, Kai couldn't see how making his fight look pretty killed someone any better, but he was quickly learning that he wasn't in the Arena anymore. Presentation mattered.
"I'm sure your father will let you compete, as long as you don't do anything wild, like try to escape or start fights with the other students." He laughed to her, stepping out of the way so she could practice more if she wanted to, running his fingers through his hair. He actually felt well enough to do more lessons now, which he didn't think would happen. But he had more 'academic' lessons to look forward to, or that's what they had told him, at least. "You still wanna meet up this evenin', and I'll show you what I know?" he asked, seeming to realise that it was almost time for them to leave again.

"Pretty reluctant is an understatement. It was a huge thing. I'm the first girl to be let into the Academy, and I'm the only girl. I never saw what the big deal was, but apparently fighting isn't suitable for girls." She rolled her eyes, putting her bow down now, crossing to the tree to pull the arrows out. "But, they let me in eventually. Dariyush helped, . Don't think they would have ever let me in without him helping out." She added, checking the tips of the arrows, checking to see if they could be used again before moving back to return the usable ones to the quiver. Dariyush wasn't all bad, he was just over protective sometimes, and stubborn. Once you got him on your side then he was a great friend. "Yeah, there are different catagories. Fighting and games, and there are more specific things under each catagory. Archery is counted as being one of the games, like running." She explained to him, stretching out and glancing to the sky. It was almost time to head back now. "Fighting isn't like at the arena, you get points for attacks, that's why style is important." She added, as though guessing that he didn't understand why you had to fight all pretty. "It isn't all about winning the fight, it's about getting the most points. I'm sure the teacher will explain to you, maybe next time, when you're a little less tired." She looked back at him at his question, smiling and nodding to him. "Sure. We can meet back here if you want, so that we're not in anyone's way." She suggested, picking up her quiver and putting it over her shoulder before grabbing her bow. "Want me to show you where your next class is? It will be inside if it's an academic one."

"That's strange..." he murmured to her, cracking his knuckles. Who would have known that these sorts of places could be so sexist. But then again, he thought, there were never any slaves in the Arena that were women who actually did any fighting. They found... other uses for the girl-slaves. But, being brought up at the bottom of the ladder of society, Kai didn't believe he had very many prejudices. Perhaps his main prejudice was towards the nobles themselves, with their closed minds and their haughty attitudes. "Well. You've set a standard now, maybe you'll find that you've opened a door for other women who wanna learn how to fight. There's no real reason for 'em to turn anyone down anymore, 'cause you're here, even if you had help from your brother." Which, Kai thought, was weird with the vibe he gotten from Dariyush so far. He hadn't expected that Pari's older brother would really feel like helping anyone, especially when it was helping someone to combat one of the oldest discriminations in the world today. He seemed pretty conservative.
"Running?" the half-demon tilted his head, and smiled to her. Kai was good at running. Heh. He didn't think much more on this, however, nodding in agreement with Pari and stretching his arms above his head. She was right, the teacher would probably explain to him tomorrow or another day, preferably in the morning when he was happier and more energetic and willing to listen. But getting points for attacks. That was different... he wasn't used to that. However, it had to be better than going out into a place as hot as hell and having the crap beaten out of you to win your master a few coins.
He was pulled out of his thinking by the sound of her voice, his ears pricking up as he looked up at her. He nodded lightly. "Yeah. Here would be better... if anyone looked at us they'd prob'ly try 'n' interfere. Don't want that." he chuckled. Arena fights were much different to what the Academy called a fight. The half-demon smiled to her as she offered to show him to his next class. "That'd be great, if you could." he murmured to her, beginning to trail off out of the garden, his pace rather slow so she could show him where he was going.

"Strange? Not really, women aren't allowed to do very much." Pari told Kai, unsure of whether or not it would be the same where he had come from. Women were seen as being inferior, as being good for nothing but looking pretty and having children. Their opinions didn't matter, and most thought that no woman could make a real difference to the world. "Layla is the perfect example of how a woman should be, according to my father. Sit there, look pretty and behave yourself." She rolled her eyes and shook her head, sighing heavily. "But that's okay, I'm used to breaking everyone's expectations by now. I'm already a huge failure, can't go much further wrong now, can I?" She smiled faintly, seeming oddly light hearted for such heavy words.
She picked up her quiver of arrows and put her bow over her shoulder before moving to follow him, walking along next to him as they crossed the gardens. "Alright, I will meet you out here when my lessons are done, and I will call to the kitchens to get us some food. I don't feel like going to dinner tonight, I'm sure that I can persuade the cook to give us something." She smiled and nodded. She lead him out of the gardens and around the house, heading over to the school building. "Your lessons will be in there, I doubt there will be many in your class...if anyone else really. Most here have private tutors." She explained to him, pausing as they reached the building. "Here we are. You okay from here? I need to get to my lesson."

"I guess I come from a place where everyone is inferior, let alone women." he shrugged lightly, tilting his head at her as they began to walk, not really understanding her reasoning. "...I don't think you're a huge failure, Pari." he commented quietly, rubbing the back of his head as if he didn't quite know what he wanted to say. His ears flattened to his head and he frowned a little, picking his words carefully. "I mean, you saved a slave from certain death. My Master was gonna die soon, I could tell even before he could... and when he did, I didn't know what was gonna happen to me. Slaves just don't get freed 'cause they have no Master. But I think he was pretty close to killin' me along with him, so we went at the same time. We're practically the same age. And besides that, you saved me from me. I feel more like a person again, thanks to you. Before I was really... well. I don't wanna think about it..." he drifted off.
He was quiet for a little while, brushing his hair out of his face before he smiled at her. "But you're not a failure. Not to me." he shrugged, glancing up at the buildings as they grew closer. "I can get in from here, yeah. See you later, Pari." he waved to her, padding on into the school building. A private tutor? That sounded easier than sitting in a class full of other students, at least. Kai might have been 'smart' in the way that he was street smart and cunning, but he wasn't so sure about his intellect in the book-smart respect. But there was only one way to find out.
The sun was dipping below the horizon by the time he walked out of the building again, the half demon stretching in the dying light. Ohhh, his head hurt. It really hurt. Who knew that learning was so... so hard? But all in all, despite the fact that he had spent the last few hours sitting at a desk with a tutor, learning things he'd never thought he could find useful, he wasn't half bad at it. He was leaning against a tree as he looked for Pari, hiding a yawn behind his hand. A little exercise actually sounded really good right now, after sitting in that room for so long and being quiet and organised. A little chaos to balance the order and all of that.

Pari seemed a little...bemused as he began to speak, tilting her head to the side just a little. He didn't think that she was a failure? That was a first, he was probably the only in the whole Academy who thought that. She found herself smiling faintly as he spoke, though she had no idea how to react. She wasn't used to recieving compliments, especially ones that actually meant something. Coming from Kai, she believed that every word was sincere, and she just didn't know how to respond. She glanced down at the ground akwardly before looking up at him, still smiling, the faintest of blushes sitting on her cheeks. "Thanks, Kai." She murmured, but it didn't feel like it was enough. After a moment's thought she stepped forward to hug him, it seemed like an appropriate response, the most fitting response anyway.
"See you later, Kai." She smiled to him as she released him and stepped back, looping a stray strand of hair around her ear, pausing for a moment to watch him disappear inside before turning to head to her own lesson. Kai was...she didn't know just what he was. He was a good person, better than anyone she had ever met before, and he had been through so much. It was nice to see him feeling more comfortable here now. Hopefully he would settle in, maybe he really could be happy here. She found herself hoping for his happiness more than her own, but that wasn't really difficult to do. Kai deserved to be happy, what had she ever done with her life to deserve something like that?
For Pari, the afternoon dragged. She was distracted by his words, barely able to concentrate on her lessons. She was amazed that she had been able to concentrate for long enough to manage to fit an arrow to her bow, nevermind shoot it where it was meant to go. By some miracle she did well, not her best, but enough to be chosen for the archery team. The rest was an unimportant blur. She wasn't paying much attention anyway.
She nipped to the kitchens to negociate some food for them, her spoils piled up on the tray she was carrying as she headed for her garden. She was tired, it had been a long day, but it wasn't too bad. She could push herself to do more before she was really out of energy. "Hi, Kai." She greeted as she spotted him, moving over to place the tray on the ground by the bottom of the tree before straightening up and stretching out. "How'd you find the lesson?"

"Mm? Oh, hey Pari." Kai's ears perked up as he heard her voice, and he glanced around for her when she appeared, the half demon smirking at the food on the tray. Food? Again? He still couldn't get his head around this. He'd been fed twice today already, that'd be enough to last him for twice this long, even without the extra meal that Pari brought. He didn't complain, however. Whether he was used to going for ages without food or not, that didn't necessarily mean that he wasn't hungry, he was just kind of used to going without at this point. He winced a little and laughed as she asked about his lessons, rubbing the back of his head and shrugging, moving from the tree to walk further into the garden, where they could sit and eat and there would be enough room for them to fight.
"It was hard. And it felt really pointless, if I'm honest." he chuckled, shaking his head a little. "But it wasn't impossible. I think I'll understand it one day... a long, long, time from now." he smiled to himself. He just wasn't an academic, he guessed. At least he wasn't stupid, though. That would have been embarrassing, and he probably would still be feeling like he really didn't fit in. "Did you do well enough in your lesson to get into the competition?" he asked curiously, clearly much more interested in what she had been doing than what he'd had to sit through. "Oh, and I think it'd be better if we fight before we eat anythin'. I don't wanna end up feeling sick." he admitted, smirking and pausing once they were right in the depths of the garden.
The waterfall distracted him for a good few moments, Kai interested in the little pond-skaters whizzing to and fro across the surface of the water, before a large fish snatched some of them up. He was actually crouched at the edge of the water for a moment or so, before he shook away the distraction and straightened up. "Sorry." he apologised lightly, moving to the middle of the garden again and starting to stretch. Those lessons had made him feel all cramped up and lethargic.

Pari hadn't really been expecting that he would have enjoyed his lessons, she doubted that he would enjoy being cooped up in a classroom, sat at a desk while everyone else was out doing more practical classes. "It will be worth the effort." She smiled to him encouraginly. "Once you have the basics you should pick the rest up easily. At least they don't have you doing history classes and politics and all the boring things I had to study as a child." She comforted. Even the memory of those classes was dull. The information may have been vaguly important to someone who was interested, but Pari wasn't. It wasn't that she wasn't academic, it was just that she wanted to fight. All the other girls her age were taking dancing lessons and she was sneaking around to watch the classes at the academy, she had always been destined not to fit in.
"My class went alright." She smiled to him, brughing her hair back from her face before following him further into the garden. "Not as well as when I was practising, but I did well enough to get onto the team." Pari sounded rather excitable about that really. She had competed once or twice before, but she got nervous when people were watching her, which made her clumsy. She was trying to overcome her stage fright, and this was a perfect oppertunity, she just had to hope that she didn't make a complete fool of herself. Focus. She just had to focus and concentrate and everything would be fine. She had the skill, now she just needed the confidence.
"I was thinking we should eat afterwards too, but I thought it was better to go to the kitchen before they start working on tonights meal, I didn't want to interupt them." She explained, putting the tray down out of the way before straightening up to look at Kai, tilting her head as she watched him. He was strange sometimes, it was hard to believe that he hadn't seen anything like this before. It must have been awful, being cooped up in the Arena like that for such a long time.
"No problem." She shook her head at him, moving to stand opposite him in the clearing, doing a few light stretches, just to make sure that she was ready. "Alright so...what first? You're the teacher."

"History... and politics?" his mind grew dull and bored just at the mentioning of the words, the half-demon sighing before promptly cheering up at the remembrance that he, at least, didn't have to do those types of lessons. He would be asleep in seconds if they made him do that. He was distracted, however, when she told him about her class, smiling a little at the news that she had made it onto the team. "That's great. I'm glad you made it. You'll do well, I think. From what I've seen, anyway." he murmured, running his fingers through his hair and stretching one last time as she moved opposite him in the middle of the gardens.
"Let's see... well, first, I'll teach you how to throw a real punch." he murmured, smirking a little as she told him he was the teacher. He'd never been a teacher before. That felt strange... but he quite liked it, he thought. He flitted across so he was standing opposite her without a word, not even noticing how fast he had moved. "Everyone here at the Academy fights well, but they punch too softly. S'probably good 'cause it means you don't hurt each other or whatever if you accidentally het hit, but if someone ever really wants to knock your head off, you need to know how to return the favour." he reached down to grab her wrist, lifting it up and forming her hand into a fist. "Your brother does it, too." he commented. "You punch well, in most respects. Really well." he checked her hand over, smirking. "But the balance is all wrong."
He moved to stand behind her. "This ain't martial arts, now. If you wanna break someone's jaw, do it this way." he guided her arm back, clapping her on the shoulder. "The strength should come from here. Throw yourself into it. Do it quick, and unexpected." he told her with a smirk. "They won't see it comin', and they'll be on the floor in seconds. You ever really smacked someone before?" he asked, circling in front of her again, letting his hands drop to his sides. "If not, go right ahead. It won't hurt me much, trust me."

Pari found her cheeks heating up as he told her that he thought that she would do well in the competition, once again thankful that her darker skin tone hide the blush. "Thanks, Kai. But I get nervous when people watch me." She admitted, shrugging slighty. "I guess that I have stage fright, I get clumsier when people watch me, and I lose my aim. I panic and rush. I'm working on it." She explained with a small nod of her head. She needed more self confidence, but she wasn't quite sure how to work on that. Apparently self confidence came from within, came from doing good things so you could feel good about yourself. Pari did good things, but they never seemed to make any diffierence to how she felt about herself. She thought maybe that she looked at the world all wrong, but, again, had no idea how to resolve that problem. She was trapped, and just kept running in circles trying to solve her problem.
Pari took a step back in surprise as Kai suddenly flitted forward so that he was in front of her, taken back by how quickly he moved. She would never get used to that, she had seen him run on water, but she would never get used to quiet how quickly he could move. "A real punch?" She repeated after him, smirking faintly, curling her fingers into a fist and letting him examine her hand. She knew how to form a fist, it was one of the first thing that you were taught at at the Academy. "Dariyush can't punch? I'm sure that he would love to hear that." She smirked to him, seeming pretty amused. Dariyush was still walking around with the evidence of their fight for everyone to see, but Kai looked as good as new; as experienced as her brother was, Kai knew about real fighting, about fighting for your life, and, right now, that was what Pari was learning.
"You want me to hit you?" She asked, her eyes widening for a moment, the girl tilting her head at him before nodding a little. She supposed she should have expected that, how else was she supposed to learn? "No, no-one. Ever." She admitted with a small smile, rolling her shoulder. She thought for a moment before swiftly pulling her arm back and throwing a punch at Kai. She changed her mind at the last minute, pulling back a little so that her full strength wasn't behind it, not that her full strength would really hurt Kai, but still. She didn't want to hurt him, she figured that if anyone threatened her then she would want to hurt them, and that would make a difference.

"Maybe," he suggested lightly, with regard to her stage fright, "you just need to have someone be there while you practice, so you get used to havin' people watch you." he tilted his head a little, one ear flicking as though he could hear something but he couldn't be bothered to pay much attention to it. "I'll sit and watch, if you wanted someone to." he suggested with a light smile, shrugging a little. If it would make her feel less nervous, and help her to get better at what she was trying to do, then he wouldn't mind. He smirked a little as she spoke about Dariyush, the half-demon nodding ever so slightly. "Oh, don't get me wrong. He can punch. Just... not properly. S'why he's still got a black eye, and I haven't. Well... I guess the whole demon thing might have somethin' to do with that as well." he rubbed the back of his head, quickly dismissing that idea.
Kai waited patiently for her to throw her punch. He didn't wince as she struck at him, and he only briefly touched his hand to his jaw, frowning at her in amusement. "That wasn't a real punch." he smirked, shaking his head. "It could'a been, but you pulled back." he sighed. He wouldn't ask her to do it again, though, not yet. Technique mattered the most, not just the power. "Otherwise, it was pretty good." he nodded to her and smiled lightly. "Just don't let the punch run away with you. You'll overbalance otherwise, and then your attempt at crackin' someone's jaw will end up with you fallin' on the ground and gettin' the crap kicked into you." he shrugged to her, examining her fist for a moment. "But yeah. That wasn't bad." he nodded.
"Okay." he thought to himself. "First you punch. Second thing to know in a real fight is how to use your surroundings. You're fightin' to live. You play dirty. How would you use this place to your advantage?" he asked, looking from the trees to the grass and the flowers around them. "You saw me with Dariyush in the desert. I used the sand. But this place is different. What would you do?" he tilted his head.

Have someone watch her practice? She hadn't thought about that, maybe that would help. "You wouldn't mind watching me practice? I wouldn't want you to get bored or anything..." She smiled to him a little. She knew that she would be stupidly self conscious with him there, and clumsy at first, but she would rather that it was Kai there than anyone else. She got the feeling that Kai would judge her much less than anyone else would, she didn't have to prove herself as much to him. He was actually the first guy that she had met that hadn't raised an eyebrow when they found out that she trained at the Academy, and that actually thought that she had a chance of being able to do this. Even Dariyush didn't really think she could do it, he just indulged her, like her father. She would prove them all wrong, someday.
She couldn't help but shake out her hand after she had punched him, letting him take her hand again to examine her knuckles. That had hurt, that was probably another reason that they didn't punch properly at the Academy. Her knuckles were all red and sore. If he'd asked her to do that again there was a strong chance that she'd take off a layer of skin. "It was almost a real punch." She smiled to him faintly, looking relieved that he didn't ask her to do it again. She didn't like hitting him, why would she, she liked Kai. Then again, if she wanted to learn to fight properly then punching him was probably going to be the last of her worries.
She nodded as he explained that she shouldn't let the momentum of the punch carry her too far, arching her eyebrow at his question about how she would use her surrounding. "Ummm..." She began, looking lost as she let her azure gaze drift around. "I'm guessing throwing grass at people wouldn't do much good. It's out of the sun, that would help..." She shrugged a little, honestly having no clue what he was looking for here.

"I wouldn't get bored." he assured her and smiled a little. "You could practice in the shade, when we took a break. I'll be too tired and hot to do much more than watch you." he pointed out, although he soon lost the thread of the conversation as their interest returned to her punch. "Yeah, it was almost a real punch." he agreed, smirking. "Don't worry 'bout it anyway. I got bones like rocks. You'd be more likely to break your hand than break my face." he chuckled to her, letting her hand go. It was strange, how talkative and confident he had become now that he was slipping back into the persona of a fighter at the arena. He was no longer the quiet outcast that Pari had brought to the Academy, he was back in his element. And what's more, he was teaching someone. He liked this teaching business, he thought.
Kai couldn't help but chuckle at her suggestions of what to do with their surroundings. It felt strange, to laugh again. "I'm surprised. You got good aim, and you've done it before. I figured you'd get at least one of the things." he murmured, leaning down in front of her to pick up something from the ground. He offered her a medium sized, rounded pebble. "Weapon." he told her, and leant down again, uncovering a patch of loose dirt, digging some up with his fingers. "Distraction." he nodded, rising to his feet once more and leading them around the garden. When they reached one of the palm trees, he patted its sturdy trunk. "Leverage." he observed. Then he pointed to the pond. "And that's the biggest asset of all. That's a distraction, a weapon and a hiding place all in one. Same for the long grass. Ain't ever had long grass to fight in before. They're good places to hide." he murmured, smiling faintly.
"See. No matter where you are, you can always find somethin' to your advantage." he pointed out with a light shrug. "If we weren't just fightin' each other I could show you how to use some of these things. But I don't really wanna throw dirt in your face." he smirked.

"Okay, just so long as you promise not to laugh at me when I miss." She nodded to him in acceptance of his offer. At least this way it should help her get used to people watching her. She should do it in stages, start with one person watching and work up from there. This plan was, however, pushed from her mind as he began to talk again, Pari smiling to him a little. "I'm glad didn't punch you properly, I'd rather not break my hand. Thanks for the warning." She rolled her eyes at him playfully. It was actually nice to see how confident and at ease he was right now. He was in his element, if her father would have approved then she would have suggested that he take over a class of his own, but she doubted that classes in dirty tactics and real fighting would be accepted here, they wouldn't fit in with the Academy's reputation. They had an image to uphold. they weren't training arena fighters, they were training honourable warriors.
Pari wouldn't have thought of half of the stuff that he was telling her about. The only one she would have got would have been the pebble, and that was only because she threw anything that was in her hand when she was in a mood. "I never realised stuff like this could be so useful." She murmured, as she gazed down into her pond. To her it was just a garden, it was safe, but Kai's explination had turned it into a battle ground. She smirked at he mentioned throwing dirt at her, shaking her head. "No, I'd rather you didn't throw dirt in my face. I think I'll be suspicious enough covered in bruises, we're lucky I can blame it on being clumsy." She murmured.
"Okay, so I know how to punch, and I have an idea whhat I can do with my surroundings. Now what?"
