Pari chuckled as she spotted the look on his face, guessing that he really must not like the spicy foods. "Drinking water just makes your mouth burn even more." She warned, seeing him reaching for a drink. "Just give it a minute and it'll cool down." She advised, pulling her shawl closer to her. Nights in the Xyndi Empire were cold, to her anyway. She was used to the boiling temperatures through the day, so when the temperature started to drop at night, Pari could always feel the chill in the air. She wouldn't have been able to cope where Kai was from, she would have frozen to death. It was doubtful that Pari and snow could get along with each other very well, she would spend the whole time wrapped up trying to keep warm! Luckily, it never snowed in the Xyndi Empire, ever.
"Tomorrow? Tomorrow classes begin." She shrugged to him, as though it was that simple. "Breakfast, warm up, morning classes, then a break for lunch to let the heat of the afternoon pass, then afternoon classes. The most energetic classes are in the morning, when it's cooler, and technical classes in the afternoon. I have fitness class in the morning, where they basically just make you run around a track, and also a hand to hand combat class...then in the afternoon I'm doing archery then sword work...you can come to classes with me if you want? The teachers will tell you which classes they think you should take once they've seen what you can do. First week is used to see where you fit into best, so it's better to go to all the different classes and see which suit you the best."
For Kai fitness classes probably wouldn't be much use, he was more likely to end up in the yoga classee which taught balance and movement. Hand to hand fighting probably wouldn't be of much use to Kai either, with all his experience at the arena. They would just have to see what the teachers said. "Or they might want you to take some reading and writing classes at some time, instead of a practical class...or I can help you with reading and writing. It's up to you." Most people at the academy were already able to read and write, coming from noble families it was something that was expected, so to make sure that all students were on the same academic level the Academy offered some traditional classes,

It was too late for Kai, however, and he'd already taken a drink of the water, which was evident in his facial expression which was a mixture between not looking impressed and slightly panicked. It passed after a little while, but he resolved himself to not EVER eat anything that was known to be spicy, no matter the degree of spiciness. It just wasn't worth it! "Classes, huh...?" he sounded vaguely curious about this, settling back against the balcony after he'd eaten his fill of the food - a surprising amount had disappeared, much to his surprise. He'd have to watch out, he wasn't even aware that you could EAT that much food without exploding or something. He listened patiently as she spoke about the classes, tilting his head as he listened to her. He still found it odd, that people taught you to fight.
Kai had never been taught. He just had to pick it up as he went along, and he was practically a master of any weapon you put into his hand now, providing that you could smack someone with it as a last resort if you didn't know what to do with it. He was particularly amused with this 'fitness class' thing. You had to run around a track? Why? His amusement was written all over his face as he listened, unable to imagine what good running around a track would do him. Suki was right, he'd not find those classes particularly useful, considering that with his speed he might very well be able to run loops around the teacher, which wouldn't paint him in the best light, he guessed. Although he did sound pretty interested with the hand-to-hand classes, even if, like fitness, he was pretty sure they couldn't teach him anything that he didn't already know.
"Reading and writing." Kai looked as though she'd slapped him, the half-demon frowning in utter confusion. What the hell would he need to learn to do that for? He wasn't nobility, you didn't take written EXAMS in combat, did you? Eventually he sighed and nodded reluctantly. "I'll trade you. If you help me to read 'n' write, I'll teach you to fight." It sounded like a weird statement, considering that they were in an Academy that taught them these things, but Kai smiled at her ambiguously. "I mean really fight. None of this 'no hitting' stuff. I don't get it. Honour or not, I never learned anythin' by bein' told there was never any chance I'd get hit. You wanna learn how you get faster and stronger? Once you get smacked a couple of times, you soon learn." he smirked.
Of course, Kai would never smack Pari or anything like that, but he would teach her the tricks he'd learnt, that you could never learn when you were being taught in a class.

"You want to teach me how to fight?" She asked, tilting her head at him and arching her eyebrow. She would have assumed that was what the classes at the academy taught you, then again, Kai was probably talking about a whole different form of fighting. Everything that Pari was taught revolved around honour, control and skill, and she doubted that the type of fighting that Kai was talking about was centered around anything but avoiding being hit, and probably trying to hit your opponent. "Alright then." She nodded after a moment's though. Being hit didn't sound like very much fun, but it would always be useful to have another fighting style under her belt. "Deal. I will teach you to read and write and you can teach me how to fight. When do we start?"
Hopefully they wouldn't be starting now, Pari didn't have enough energy to fight now. She hadn't really had a good nights sleep over the past few days, and now that she was home it all seemed to be catching up on her. She didn't want to leave Kai on his own though, hence her being sat out on the balcony with him rather than being curled up in bed. Oh, she was going to be so dead in her lessons tomorrow, it wasn't even going to be funny. She probably wouldn't wake up until midday. Oh, and was was running first thing too. She would get her feet all tangled up and end up falling over, it had happened plenty of times before, and would probably happen plenty more times. She should just resign herself to the fact that she was clumsy and there was nothing she could do about it.
"Kai..." She murmured after a moment's silence, her gaze moving to rest on him, tilting her head to the side. "Are you going to come inside tonight? Or should I bring some blankets out here for us?" Pari had noticed that he didn't seem to want to go inside, but she didn't want him sleeping out there on his own. Sleeping out on the balcony for one night wouldn't do any harm, as long as it was only one night and Kai agreed to come inside tomorrow. Beds were far more comfortable than floors. "Because, if we're sleeping out here then I really should make a bed up before I fall to sleep sat here."

"How does tomorrow evening sound, when it gets a little cooler?" he suggested with a light smile, stretching as he leant back against the balcony. Kai didn't know anything about honour, even if he could tell you a couple of things about skill and control. He couldn't tell you anything about what any of the things he did were called, or how he could better himself or make it easier for himself or any of those things. But if someone twice the size of you was running at you with the intention of knocking you flat, or if someone moved to strike you with a low blow, or tried to cheat you in any way by tripping you up or pulling you down, he could tell you what to do. With complete ease, he could tell you how to turn the tables on said opponent. And more than that, he could probably tell you how to do a lot of those things to someone, as well. There was no 'honour' in the Arena.
He had drifted off into a nostalgic sort of silence when she said his name, looking up and tilting his head at her curiously. He had been miles away. "We...?" he lifted a brow at her. Since when did she feel it was necessary for her to sleep outside with him? He could assure her that even inside he was only a wall away, and would probably be able to hear her breathing even then, so she didn't need to stay so close by. He'd slept alone for longer than she'd even been alive, after all. But he decided not to argue, eventually rising to his feet. "Don't make yourself uncomfortable for my sake. I'll come inside." he murmured reluctantly, pushing a hand through his hair and moving to look into his bedroom through the curtain, frowning at it a little.
Turning to face her, he gave her a light smile. "Goodnight, Pari. See you in the mornin'." he nodded to her, before disappearing in through the curtain and into his room. He collapsed down on the bed, frowning up at the ceiling. He didn't want to stay in here. It felt so artificial. He would wait until she fell asleep, he decided, and then he'd go back outside.

"Tomorrow evening sounds good enough to me." She nodded to him, "We can start your writing classes whenever you want. All you really need to do is practice though, it's not all that difficult when you've learnt the basics." She assured him. He wouldn't need to learn too much if he didn't want to, just the basics like all of the letters in the alphabet, how to write his name, and how to read simple, everyday stuff. She doubted that Kai would need to learn anything too complex, he didn't seem too keen on the idea of more academic lessons, and for some reason Pari couldn't ever see him really being interested in books. The basics would be all that he really needed to know.
"You're sure?" She asked with a smile, seeming rather relieved that he had agreed to come inside; she hadn't been looking forward to the thought of spending the night outside. She hated to admit it, but Pari had become rather dependant on luxery. It was all that she was used to, and being away from the academy had just highlighted the fact that she relied on all the little luxieries, like a nice comfortable bed, clean clothes and warm water to wash with. The next time she left the academy she would have to make sure that she was better prepared.
"Night Kai." She smiled to him sleepily as he disappeared behind the curtain and into his room, rising to her feet to shuffle around and blow out all the candles before heading into her own room. She took a moment to wash and change into a thin nightdress before clambering into bed and curling up under the blankets. No sooner than her head hit the pillow she was asleep, Pari giving into her exhaustion without any resistance. Tomorrow would be a long day, they would both need their rest.

It was precisely because Kai knew that Pari wouldn't exactly be used to roughing it outside that he pretended to sleep indoors until his sensitive ears told him that her breathing had evened out, and she was asleep. She was just as dependant on luxury as he was dependant on the simpler things; he got the feeling that a soft bed would make his back and shoulders ache, and all of these comforts that nobles felt normal - an excess of food, and wine and great silks and all of these things would grate on his nerves. He wasn't a great fan of luxury. Although he realised that, after today's excitement, there was little chance of Pari waking, he still took care to be quiet as he crept out to the balcony again, hiding a yawn and curling up on the cool stone. He yawned widely, looked up at the moon for a few moments, and fell asleep.
It was definitely the best night's sleep that Kai had ever had, he had to admit. Even though he still awoke, like clockwork, as the sun rose, it was so different to waking up to the irritating noise of a guard shouting obscenities, and other slaves grumbling and shouting and grunting, and a whole rainbow of smells to suffocate you. It was airy up on the balcony, and cool, and the half demon slept through until sunrise, when his nose twitched and he shuffled a little into the shadows away from the light, as if to sleep a bit longer. The fact that he COULD sleep longer if he desired was all it took to get him standing up, looking down on the garden of the Academy as though he had convinced himself that he'd imagined it. He stayed like this for a few minutes, before a faint smile lit up his face, he stretched, and then leapt from the balcony.
He had wandered around the garden at first, pouncing at the crickets when he thought that nobody would spot him and sitting, predator-like on the boulder above the pool of water, keen eyes watching the fish as if wondering what would happen if he made chase on any of them. Eventually he shook himself out of this childish pleasure - it was very very rarely that he ever got time just to sit and 'play' so to speak - and set about warming himself up for whatever the day had planned for them, even if he didn't know when that day was supposed to start. He was amazed that nobody else had gotten up yet, with the sun. Strange nobles. He had trained for a while, accidentally broken one of the small, spindly palm trees with one kick (this was hastily hidden behind the larger shrubs in the garden) and contented himself with chasing the emerging butterflies when he could be bothered.
As morning approached, and the sun really began to climb the sky, baking the ground, Kai found himself sitting under the rushing stream of the waterfall, eyes closed and his head down. It was refreshing, and anyone watching would just think that he was cooling himself down. But the look of concentration on his face said something different. Kai never had time to think about things, but today he had all the time in the world, it seemed.

Kai wasn't the only one to have a restful nights sleep. Though they hadn't really been forced to sleep anywhere unpleasant on their little trip, it was still nicer to sleep in your own bed, surrounded by familiar things. She felt safe here, as though she didn't need to worry about anything while she slept. Well, there was Kai, but she didn't need to worry too much about him through the night, did she? He would just sleep, there wasn't very much trouble that he could get up to while sleeping, was there? No, of course not. He would be fine. She needed to stop worrying about him a little bit. Kai wasn't stupid. He may be out of his depth, but he wasn't stupid, so she should just let him get used to things on his own, and be there for him when he needed a hand.
It was still quite early when Pari began to stirr, but already the day was starting to get hot. She was running on automatic pilot as she rolled out of bed and shuffled over to the washbasin on the draws to wash. Her brain hadn't even kicked in yet. In fact, it didn't kick in properly until she was fully dressed, her mind suddenly springing awake as she tied her hair back. Kai. She had almost forgotten about him. She should go wake him up, over sleeping on their first day here wouldn't be a good idea.
"Kai...?" She called lightly as she lingered outside his room. It would have been improper for her to just waltz in there. It was his room, she couldn't go in without being invited. "Kai, it's time to wake up now..." She called again, tilting her head at the silence in the room. Surely he wasn't sleeping that deeply? She lingered outside his room for a few minutes longer before reaching out to move the curtain aside and peer into the dim room, surprised to find the bed empty. Well, that explained why he wasn't answering.
He must have been in the garden, that was the only place that Pari could think that Kai would want to go; she doubted that he would have ventured inside to explore. She returned to her room to grab his uniform before setting off to find him. She visited the kitchens on her way, grabbing them an apple each for breakfast before heading out into the gardens. It looked as though it was going to be a pleasant day, the skys were clear and the air was still, not so much as a breeze ruffling the leaves of the plants. It would get hot later.
Pari wasn't quite sure what she had been expecting Kai to be doing when she found him, but she hadn't been expecting to find him sat under the waterfall. "Um...Kai...we have water inside for washing with..." She murmured, tilting her head at him. She couldn't think of any other reason for him being sat like that, but the look of concentration on his face suggesting that he was doing something more than showering.

Kai couldn't even hear her over the crash of the waterfall, not even with his sensitive hearing. To him, it was as though she wasn't even there, the half demon not stirring from under the running water, which dripped from the tips of his hair and from his chin. He seemed to be tensing up, however, as if he was almost finished perfecting whatever it was he was concentrating on. A second later he stirred, icy blue eyes snapping open as he moved fluidly into a crouch. His pupils narrowed to nothing more than slits when he flitted forward at what was undoubtedly one of his fastest movements; he completely disappeared from under the waterfall. There was a roar of wind and the surface of the pond was disturbed by a swift line of ripples, and the leaves on the nearest palms were sent waving by an unexpected breeze. But as soon as it had appeared, it was gone again.
Kai found himself standing at the other side of the pond, on the grass, looking adorably bewildered. He'd not expected that it would actually work! Slowly, he shook his wet, ruffled hair out of his face and turned to peer over his shoulder at the waterfall, all that way across the water. He'd ran across the pond. Across it? That was interesting. A playful, victiorious little grin lit up his face and he shook his hair out like a dog, ears twitching and flicking the odd few droplets of water everywhere. He'd have to try that again at some point. Although he slowly began to realise that he wasn't the only one in the garden, whipping around again to look at Pari as if he didn't know it was her. The playful look in his eyes instantly faded, and his tail stopped wagging. He smirked sheepishly, running his fingers through his hair.
"Mornin'." he mumbled, seeming more reserved than when she had caught him unawares. He really was just like a puppy if you left him on his own for too long, completely different to the cynical, hardened fighter of the Arena that she'd first seen. "Sorry... should I stay away from the pond?" he asked, before gazing down at the bundle of clothes in her hand that was his uniform. "...What's that?" he tilted his head curiously.

Pari...well...what could she say? She wasn't expecting that. She had lingered by the edge of the pond, her head tilted to the side as she watched him, wondering if it was possible that he had fallen to sleep under the waterfall, and the next thing she knew he was stood on the otherside of the water. It was too early for her mind to work that quickly, and she spent a long moment looking between Kai and the waterfall, as though in an attempt to work out what had happened. He had...ran? Yes, he had definatly run...but across the water? Was that even possible? Evidently so seeing as he was stood just a little way away from her, and she was pretty certain that he hadn't jumped that distance.
"Woah..." It was the only fitting thing that sprang into her mind, her gaze flitting back to Kai, astonishment in her eyes. "You just ran across the water, Kai. I...you...this is a trick, isn't it?" She pouted eventually before shaking her head, as though to dismiss the subject, instead focusing on what he had said. "Morning. I don't mind you playing in the pond, as long as you don't disturb my fish too much. If you disturb my fish then I will have to ban you from playing in my pond." She explained, actually taking a moment to glance into the water to check on her precious fish before looking back up at Kai to nod, as though to say that they were alright.
"This? It's your uniform." She smiled, holding the bundle of clothes out for him. "I brought you an apple to eat for breakfast too. You better get ready quickly though, we'll have to head across for classes soon."

"...A trick?" he turned around to look back across at the waterfall as if he wasn't quite sure what to say to her. If she hadn't been there to ask him about it then he might have been able to convince himself that it hadn't actually happened, that he'd imagined it. But now that she was questioning him, he had to come up with something. "I don't think so... I think I ran." he managed eventually shrugging. "I didn't think it had worked, but I was there and now I'm here. So, I guess I must have run across." he frowned ever so slightly, rubbing the back of his head and looking at anything but her. He was also thankful for the change in subject, smirking down at the fish and checking that they were still alive. "I'll try not to scare 'em or anything." he promised her, looking up again as she mentioned the uniform.
Oh, yeah. That. He suppressed his sigh as he took the uniform from her, nodding absently as she said they didn't have time. Without a word, as if expecting her to look away, he turned around and began to change, pulling his wet shirt over his head - the damnable thing was sticking to him. Only a few moments later and he had changed, straightening up and lifting a brow down at the uniform. This was... it? It wasn't much different from what he'd worn at the Arena, he had to admit - it only consisted of loose fitting white trousers and an open, scarlet waist-coat. Although, obviously it was of much better quality than anything else he'd ever worn. He didn't much like the waist coat, and he might find himself putting it somewhere and forgetting about it through the day if he wasn't careful. But it did rather suit him.
"Okay, ready when you are." he told her, shaking his hair out of his face; it was already starting to dry in the morning heat. It was going to be hot today, he could practically taste it in the air. Luckily, dealing with the heat was what he was used to, although he'd quickly tire and become sluggish and sleepy as the day wore on.

"I think that you did run across the water..." She agreed, glancing over at the waterfall again before smiling and shaking her head at him. "You're just full of surprises, aren't you? The tutors will have to keep an eye on you, you'll be running rings around them before they know it." It was true, Pari didn't know just what to expect from Kai. Everytime she thought that she had his abilities just about worked out he did something that caught her off guard. Was there anything that he couldn't do? She got the picture that Kai was a fast learner, and she had no doubts that he would soon find himself amongst the best students in the academy. He would probably even surprise himself.
"Kai!!! Geez! Next time you want to strip I need a warning!" She exclaimed, blushing as her hand flew to cover her eyes, Pari swiftly turning away from him. She should have been used to things like that now. After she had been around for a while the other students seemed to have forgotten that she was a girl, which never had pleasant consequences. Sometimes she would rather that they rememeber that she was a girl and remember to keep certain conversations for when she wasn't around.
Her blush was fading when he finished changing, Pari having gotten over that little episode. "Finished?" She asked, looking over her shoulder to peek through her fingers at him, just to check that he was decent before moving her hand. "The uniform suits you. Here, catch. You should eat." She threw the apple over to him before she started walking, they needed to get over to the teaching grounds before the warm up started. It wasn't a good idea to be late on your first day. "How long have you been up for, Kai? Couldn't you sleep?"

"A warnin'? I assumed the fact that I was startin' to strip was warnin' enough." he smirked to her and shrugged, catching the apple swiftly and moving to follow her, choosing to ignore what she'd said about the uniform suiting him. Clothes were just clothes to Kai - usually they were too hot and he'd never owned more than one pair before, so he just rolled with whatever Pari was saying. His gaze lingered on the waterfall when they walked away, a faint smile on his face. He probably could surprise himself after he'd been in the Academy for a little while, but he wasn't expecting anything special this first day. He was still like a fish out of water, he just felt more comfortable now that they were on the learning side of things, opposed to the dinner-with-nobles side.
It felt strange to be eating again in the morning, after eating just before he went to bed. He was looking at the apple as though it was something foreign, trailing after Pari as they walked out of the garden. It was gone soon enough nonetheless - eating more couldn't be a bad thing for him, considering the pitiful amount that he'd been living on for the last few... for forever. He realised that he was drfiting off into a day-dream, however, and skipped a little to catch up and walk with Pari. Being late the first day probably wouldn't be the best idea, no.
"Hm...?" he tilted his head at her question, looking up at the sky as if to find the sun and tell the time. "No, I slept fine. Really well, actually. But I always wake up at dawn. The sun comes up and I get up with it. I've done it since I can remember." he murmured with a light shrug, smiling as the sun filtered out from the trees as they walked - there wasn't a cloud in the sky, and the air was thick and heavy. A typical day in the Empire, really, but Kai was still waiting for that miraculous day when it actually rained. He didn't think it would ever happen, to be honest, soon dismissing it to look out across the Academy. His ears twitched at the sound of voices, the half demon looking around expectantly.

"I would prefer having the chance to avert my eyes before you start to strip, Kai." She pointed out with a small smile and a shake of her head. How he could change like that in the middle of the garden, where anyone could see, was beyond her. She would have died from embarassement. Then again, it was doubtful that he ever had very much privacy at the arena. He'd lived out his life under the watchful eye of his master and guards, so it was understandable that he didn't need much much privacy. To be fair, Pari hadn't really have very much time to herself growing up, not with an over protective brother like Dariyush. She was surprised that he hadn't been knocking on her door this morning, making sure that she went to class. Oh, but he and Kai had fought last night, hadn't they? Maybe it was better that they gave each other a little distance until they learnt how to act civily.
"When the sun came up?" Pari was obviously surprised by that, raising an eyebrow as she looked around at Kai, not knowing how anyone could choose to get up that early; it was hard enough getting out of bed for morning classes, nevermind getting up at sunrise. She would be exhausted by the afternoon if she got up that early. "Wow, you must have had loads of free time if you got up that early." She smiled and nodded. "And you'd have had the grounds pretty much to yourself."
As they left the gardens and walked around the main house there were more people around, students milling around in groups, most looking sleepy as they chatted, waiting to go to their first lesson. Everyone, and that was everyone, stared as they walked past, and a wave of whispers followed them. Boys weren't supposed to gossip as much as girls, but Pari didn't believe that theory at all. Boys gossiped just as much as girls. She rubbed at the back of her head uncomfortably as they reached the teaching block, leaning against the wall and looking down at the floor. "And here was me hoping that maybe they'd all be too tired for gossiping this early."

Privacy was a little hard to come by in the Arena, that much was painfully obvious. You just got on with what you had to do - when you spent one half of your day getting the crap beaten out of you and the other half licking your wounds and waiting for the bruises to form so that you could go out the next day and do it all again, you tended to forget about little things like modesty. There were more important things to be worrying about. He threw her a light smile at her comment, shrugging a little and moving to walk with her as they moved away, nodding in confirmation that yes, he rose when the sun did. "It was pretty quiet around here, yeah." he nodded to her in agreement. It had been peaceful and quiet, and he'd had as much time to sit and think as he wanted.
"It's a different place, when there are no people around." he informed her softly, as they moved out of the garden. "Everything is silent... and you can hear the birds, and the wind." he murmured, looking up at the trees as he spoke, as if remembering what it had been like. It was probably pretty quiet to anyone even at the busiest of times in the Academy, but to Kai, when all of the voices had quietened down, and peoples' footsteps had faded away, that was when it was truly peaceful. He was smiling to himself as they worked their way around the main house, seeming alert and ready when they encountered their first students.
He seemed to find it amusing, really, the way they stared and whispered. He'd lived with this his whole life, and most people who had seen him a few times before didn't bother to whisper, but these were students, and there was the added bonus that Pari, the only girl in the Academy, was there as well. They were like a walking freak show to all of the 'normal' people around there, weren't they? "Just another morning by the looks of things." he commented softly, quirking a brow as she paused, reaching out to gently tilt her chin up so she was looking at him, smiling a little. "Hey. Don't let it bother you. Just count yourself lucky that you're important enough for them to gossip about. They must all be pretty borin' in comparison." he shrugged. "I can always growl at them again though, if you want." he offered.

Pari had always found it to be rather tranquil at the Academy, too much so sometimes. Sometimes it was just too quiet. Weeks and weeks could pass without anything remotely interesting happening. Then again, Pari had always longed for adventure, hadn't she? She had never really been one to look forward to a quiet life. Quiet was all well and good, but she had to admit, she would rather be in the middle of everything, out in the world where there always seemed to be so much happening. She could, however, see why Kai liked the quiet. After all the noise at the arena, and all the crowds, it must be nice to be able to just sit on your own somewhere, away from all the hustle and bustle, and just think.
"Interesting enough? Hmm, I suppose you're right about that. Not everyday people from here run off and come back with a strange new friend, throw in the fact that I'm a girl and you have a scandal in the making." She smiled to him faintly. At least she wasn't stood their on her own any more, now at least she had Kai around. "Growl at them? Nah, that is what they'll be waiting for. We should just be average and boring and just stand here and wait." She nodded to him, casting a brief glare over his shoulder at everyone before looking back at him. After the lessons today, they would all have enough to talk about, so it would be better to kick the day off quietly. Plus, when Dariyush turned up with his black eye or whatever Kai had done to him last night, that would cause a whole new round of gossip.
They weren't waiting for very long before a bell rang somewhere inside the building, Pari straightening up. "You ready?"
