"I'm sorry, Kevay, I'm just too picky for anyone in this world. Maybe one day I'll find a man who's as picky as I am. We'll be picky together." she laughed to him, averting her eyes as he moved to dress himself, just so she wasn't tempted to do anything bad. Stupid Kevay, looking especially irresistible today. Maybe she should blindfold herself, that might work... or not. She looked confused as he threatened her with small children, the jester tilting her head at him before smiling and rolling her eyes playfully. "Fine, fine." she consented, skipping back across the room to tie her hair in her pigtails, the bells on the new ribbons that he'd bought her jingling merrily as she moved to his side once more.
"Happy now?" she beamed, grabbing his hand and tugging him out of the door, humming cheerfully as she moved down the corridor. "Square, park, whatever. Sounds good!" she nodded to him, leading them down the stairs and unable to keep the smile off her face at the reaction Kevay got. All eyes, male or female, were on him. Granted that the majority of the male ones were full of envy, but all the women in the tavern were positively falling over themselves trying to get a look at him. "You are going to have a heck of a day." she informed him, moving straight to the door and out into the sunshine.
Lexie couldn't really tell how many people were stalking them as she moved to a tiny park in the village, sinking down onto a bench and observing everyone for a moment or two. "Oh!" she reminded herself suddenly, "You wanted a show, huh?" she grinned, rising to her feet again to leave Kevay to his loving as she skipped a few metres away, illusions springing up around her with a wave of her hand.

"Picky?" He questioned, as though the word was foreign to him, before he suddenly smirked, a gleam of impish mischief in his eyes. "If I didn't know better I would have thought that you were challenging me, Lexie. Double challenging me." He chuckled to her and shook off that thought. No, he couldn't think like that, just no. He doubted that Lexie would appreciate him meddling in her love life (that and he didn't want to share her, not right now), nor did he think that she really wanted him seducing her. She was doing a good job of resisting him, all that effort probably meant that she didn't want to fall victim to him. Not that he understood her; who wouldn't want to fall victim to him? Then again, being friends would be much harder if she was obsessed with him. All things considered, it was best that she was picky.
"Very happy." He confirmed with a bright smile and a nod as he followed her along the corridor. "Your ribbons suit you, I'm glad that you found them." He murmured, his smile a little fainter this time, more thoughtful, but that looked past quickly, like a cloud passing over the sun. One moment his gaze had darkened and the next it was filled with light again. He refused to linger on what had happened. It was in the past, that was all that mattered.
The cupid distracted himself with the adoring looks that he was receiving, flashing his best, charming smile here and there, throwing a wink to anyone that caught his eye. He could feel their attention, their love, it was a warmth that crawled over his skin. By the time they reached the park he was practically glowing, sinking down to sit by Lexie on the bench, throwing his arm casually along the back of the bench behind her, turning his face up towards the sun. "I wanted a show." He confirmed, looking up at her as she rose to her feet to skip away. Her place was soon filled by one of the most confident amongst his new admirers, soon followed by someone else to sit on his other side. Ahhh, this was the life. Kevay could get used to living like this.

It wasn't long before a rather large crowd gathered around them both; around Kevay because of his charm and beauty and around Lexie because of the show she was putting on. It wasn't often that they received visitors in the village to begin with, but when two colourful characters like a cupid and a jester showed up, it was like a holiday of sorts. The little jester didn't know when the crowd had gotten so big, but she didn't particularly mind. Her riddles and tricks amused the majority of the people around, and her illusions enthralled the children, entertaining them to no end. And the only ones who weren't roped in by her show were the young women (and a couple of young men, too) who were gathered around Kevay, rendered speechless by his flawless features.
It was almost midday when Lexie finally had to stop for a break, the crowd around her disbanding to set about their chores and other things that needed doing. The jester scooped up the coins that she'd earned, slipping them into the pouch at her waist and stretching languidly, doing one last, spirited cartwheel as the children left for lunch and casting them a cheerful wave. Then she gazed over at Kevay, almost falling over at the sight of him. Was it just her, or was he even more dazzling than usual? He had to be. There was no other explanation for him looking quite so perfect today.
"Has anyone ever told you how pretty you really are?" she asked with a merry laugh, moving to perch on the side of the bench, just in case some of his admirers chose to try and rip her to bits for getting too close to him. "You look much better. More like yourself." she sighed in relief.

The morning progressed rather well, in his opinion anyway. His attention hadn't remained on Lexie's show for very long, soon drifting to his little crowd of fans. He liked being fawned over, it made him feel all loved and wanted. All these people and he was the center of attention, and it wasn't as though Kevay was shy. He lapped up the attention, soaking it all up until every last lingering shred of cold and of darkness that was lingering in him was pushed out. In fact, by the time that Lexie came over to join them he was practically glowing; the sunlight was glinting off his hair, mischief and light in his azure eyes, his skin was radient and flawless...he looked like something out of a painting.
"Hiiii Lexie." He beamed to her, shooing one of the young women from next to him before leaning over to hook an arm around her waist and tug her down the bench next to him, not seeming to share any of her worries about the crowd getting jealous. "How's you? You come to sit in the sunshine with me?" He chuckled to her, actually placing a light kiss on the top of her head. "You want to go get dinner? I'm sure that someone would love to feed us, we can have anything you want..." He offered with another charming smile.

"Eeee!" Lexie squealed as she found herself being tugged down onto the bench next to him, trying to offer the girl he'd shoo'ed an apologetic smile but giving up when she only got daggers for her trouble. Hanging around with Kevay was dangerous right now, especially in a tiny village and when he was looking especially radiant. She caught herself staring at him unashamedly, not hearing a word he said and smiling dazedly as she realised he had asked her a question. She quickly recovered, of course, smacking his arm playfully. "You're too pretty today Kevay. I may have to stay away from you until your beautiful glow stops blinding me." she pretended to pout and turn away, though the cold shoulder didn't last for long.
"I'm fine, but I'm all jestered out." she admitted, blushing brightly as he kissed her forehead, somehow managing to keep to the same train of thought. "Those kids are relentless, my illusions couldn't take much more. I haven't been that crowded since I was a kid, and me and Romano were... we were... oh."
The colour had quite suddenly drained from Lexie's face, her mis-matched eyes growing wide with dread. She started to tremble, gasping quietly and covering her mouth with one hand. "Romano... he... he's... oh God."
She had totally forgotten. Her brother had been on the verge of being executed and she had FORGOTTEN. Worse than that, she'd told him she would help him, but she hadn't even seen him beforehand, she hadn't done anything. She'd realised Kevay had been kidnapped and she had dropped everything. There wasn't even time to go back and try and put things right. It had been days.
Her brother was dead.
And it was as good as her fault.
"I think I'm gonna be sick." she murmured, silent tears steaming down her cheeks as she rose to her feet. "I have to go, Kevay. I need... I have to sit down for a second." she managed, before shuffling off in the direction of the inn they had been staying at, her arms folded and her head down as if to hide from the world. It was as though all the colour in her had suddenly turned to grey.

Lexie's sudden change in mood caught him by suprirse, though it didn't take much to put two and two together. Romano, the name sparked memories which had been forgotten in all the trauma. Her brother chained, lead shuffling away to the prison, he was going to be executed. Wait, with how long it must have been then...oh. Crap. He had promised her that they would find a way to save her brother, he had promised her, and then he had gone and got himself caught and dragged away. Oh fuck, this was all his fault. He was used to making promises that he couldn't keep, but not to someone that he cared about, and not something that was so important. Romano was...he didn't even want to think about what had happened to Romano, and he had no idea how to look after Lexie.
He wasn't good at looking after people, but he could do his best, right?
"Lexie..." He spoke her name softly as he rose to her feet to follow her, leaving his group of admirers without a goodbye or a second glance. He looped an arm around her shoulders to guide her towards the inn, giving her a weak smile. "I'm sorry. I know it doesn't help, but I am. If there's anything that you need then just tell me." He murmured to her, barely even glancing up to greet the inn keeper as he lead her up the stairs to their room. Without a paused he unlocked the door and guided her in, sitting her down on the bed before moving back to close the door before pausing. "You want me to go? I don't mind...give you a few hours? I'll bring lunch back with me if you want. Or, I can stay, might be better not being on your own."

Lexie didn't say anything as he put an arm around her shoulders; for the first time since she'd met Kevay, it was like he wasn't there at all. She was sobbing to herself quietly as he led them inside, barely even seeing the stairs and not aware of much up until they got into the room. She hugged her knees to her chest as she was set down on the bed, curling up and hiding her face in her arms so he wouldn't see her cry. When she eventually looked up, her cheeks were wet with tears and her eyes were red. "I've been lookin' for him for years..." she whispered, almost as if in disbelief. "Since it happened. Years and years and then I find him and he's gone." she sobbed, shaking her head and sighing shakily.
"Go..." she told him, her voice muffled from where she had hidden her face away again. It wasn't anywhere near Kevay's fault, but the temptation to scream at him right now in her hysteria was overwhelming, and she didn't want to feel any more guilty than she already did. "Just go... I'm not hungry... I'll be fine." she muttered under her breath, settling back against the wall and pressing her eyes shut tightly. She didn't want to say anything, or be with anyone. She just wanted to sit.

The cupid felt utterly useless as he looked over at Lexie, the glow around him seeming to dim. He could see the grief curl around it, actually see the dark creep into what he could only call her aura, blocking out all the colours. He had to fight to hide the shiver than ran down his spine, Kevay moving to step towards her before pausing as she spoke. "Lexie, I..." He began and trailed off. He couldn't bear to see her upset like this, but he didn't have the words to soothe her and make her feel better. Loss wasn't something that Kevay had ever had to deal with, and he wasn't sure that his method of dealing with guilt was very healthy. Pretend that it had never happened, push it to the back of your mind and avoid everything that reminded you of it; it wasn't really a lesson that he wanted to pass on to her.
"I'll come back in a couple of hours." He told her in a gentle voice, turning to head towards the door again, his shoulders slumped. He felt useless, and he wasn't sure that leaving her alone was such a good idae, but it was what she wanted. "I know you're not hungry now, but I'll bring food, just in case." He mumbled before slipping out of the room and sighing heavily. Oh fuck, how was he meant to deal with this?
As promised, it was an hour or so before Kevay returned, a bundle in his arms. The glowthat had surrounded him was gone, replaced by guilt. Not only had he contributed to her brothers death, but he had no idea how to look after her, he really was a bad friend.
"Leixe." He spoke her name just loud enough for her to hear as he knocked on the door, "It's me, Kevay, can I come in?"

"'Kay..." she mumbled as he moved to leave, rubbing her eyes and curling up further on the bed. Once he was gone the hysteria really took hold, and Lexie's memory of the last couple of hours were somewhat hazy. She had stopped crying a few minutes before; it was like she had completely run out of tears. It was starting to get dark now, the room bathed in bright amber light. The jester had changed clothes by this time, the bright colours replaced by her ordinary street clothes, her ribbons abandoned on the bedside table to let her blonde curls tumble down over her back. She was sat on the bed again, eyes red, but she was pretty calm by now.
She looked up as she heard the knock at the door, Kevay's voice filtering through to her. Had it been that long already? He sounded sad. She didn't even have enough emotion left in her to feel bad that she'd spoiled his good mood; there was nothing left to give right now. Silently, Lexie shuffled to the door, clicking it open and brushing her hair from her face. She tried to conjure a smile for him, she really did, but it didn't quite work. "Hey," she mumbled, her voice hoarse, "You okay? Sorry for sending you away, I just... I couldn't..." she gave up, shaking her head and moving back from the door to let him in. She closed it afterwards, listening to the click as it locked and moving back to the bed.

In all honesty, he was surprised when she opened the door; with the state that she had been in earlier he had been expecting her to ignore him. Then again, it was worryingly quiet in there, her answering the door saved him from embarrassing himself by trying to get through a locked door to make sure that she was alright.
Kevay offered her a weak smile as she opened the door, moveing to step inside and put his package down on the side. "It's alright, I understand." He murmured to her, waiting for her to shut the door before he swept down to put his arms around her and hug her, stroking her hair. She looked terrible, not like the Lexie that he knew at all, and it was heartbreaking to see. How was he meant to bring her back? How was he meant to console her? Ugh! He wasn't a good enough person to do this, but he was going to have to try his best.
"I'm here for you, Lexie. No matter what." He whispered to her, absently nuzzling her neck. "I know that I'm no replacement or anything, I'm not trying to do that, just want you to know that I'm here and I'll do my best, okay?" He smiled faintly, shifting to place a light kiss on her cheek. "Hugs fix everything, right?"

She was actually rather surprised as he leant down to put his arms around her, a faint smile touching to her lips. She leant into his embrace, resting her head on his shoulder and loosely slinging her arms around him. She sighed deeply, just standing there for a moment. Okay, maybe sitting on her own for hours hadn't done her much good at all - she was grateful for him being there now, more than grateful (even though just being close to Kevay when she was like this was enough to make her head spin). "Thank you..." she mumbled in a low voice, hugging him a little more tightly, as though she was afraid he would disappear or something. She liked it there with Kevay, he made her forget everything a little.
"That's all I need to know." she told him as he said he'd do his best, "It's all I can ask..." she shook her head, glancing up for a second as he leant down to kiss her cheek, a light blush making her cheeks pink. Great, even when she was in a state and he could conjure a blush from her. Stupid magical cupid powers. "Mm... hugs fix everything." she sighed heavily, closing her eyes again as though to shut out the rest of the world.

He smiled a little as he felt her relax in his arms, tightening his grip on her a little to lift her from the ground and carry her over to the bed, sitting down before settling her in his lap. "I hate seeing you upset." He murmured to her, reaching up to rest a hand on her cheek, azure eyes studying her carefully. She was still in there, somewhere, she just needed time, or he hoped so anyway. Without thinking he brushed her tears away from her cheeks with his thumb, smiling to her sadly again. He didn't know what to do to help! Should they just sit there, should they talk, should he try t get her to eat? Ah, he just wanted to make her feel better, why couldn't he make her feel better?
He sighed lightly, not even realising that he allowed his hand to move down to her shoulder, fingertips trailing over the side of her neck lightly with the movement. He shifted to let his head rest on her shouder, closing his eyes. "Just tell me what to do and I'll do it. I'm not good at this, Lexie, but I'm trying."

"I'm sorry..." she mumbled in apology as he said he didn't like to see her upset, sighing lightly as if to pull herself together. She settled on his lap far too easily as he sat down on the bed, her arms looped around his neck. Her attention was drawn far too easily to the sensation of his fingertips on the side of her neck, and she blushed again. "I know you're trying... thank you for trying." she smiled to him, playing with the tips of his hair as he rested his head on her shoulder, letting her hand move to his cheek. "Let's just sit a while? I don't want to think about anything. I just want to forget for a while." she decided with a light nod, smiling to herself. It was nice, sitting here with him.
"You are good at this." she murmured to him, "I guess you've never had to do it before, huh." she moved her arm to brush her curls out of her face before stroking his hair absently, watching the amber light play over his flawless skin.

His eyes closed as she played with his hair, smiling to himself faintly, seeming comfortable. "You don't have to be sorry." He shook his head a little, opening his eyes to look up at her. "Everyone gets upset sometimes, you don't have to be sorry." He smiled to her softly as he looked up at her. "I never let anyone close enough to care when they felt bad, this is a first." He admitted. That was better, she was already looking a little better, distracted from her thoughts. Oh...distracted, Kevay could do distracted. Maybe giving her a break from her thoughts for a few hours would help? Give her time to clear her head, help her to feel better? It was the only idea that he had right now, and it wasn't as though Lexie seemed against his company.
He sighed again, but only faintly this time, before shifting a little, brushing his lips over the side of her neck, scattering kisses over her soft skin. "I could help you feel better, help you to forget for a while, if you like." He offered, his lips reaching her jawline, gaze flickering up to her again to await her answer.

"Never ever? I feel honoured." Lexie admitted with a light smile, glancing down at him and not realising that she was still blushing a little. "Okay... I won't be sorry. But I don't like making people sad. It makes me feel bad inside..." she murmured, seeming a step away from remembering Romano's fate all over again. Kevay seemed to have plans against letting her remember everything, though. A hazy look fell over her eyes as she realised he was kissing her neck, wondering what he was doing for a second before everything just faded into the background like some kind of pleasant, dizzy dream. Her eyes closed and she smiled to herself, running her fingers through his hair and resting her hand on the back of his neck.
"Mm...?" she looked dazed and confused when he spoke, obviously not having heard a word he was saying. When he looked at her, the rest of the world just melted into the background. Before Lexie knew it she had tilted his head up gently with her free hand and had leant forward to kiss him. Stars danced across her vision and for a second she felt like she had just floated away on some weird cloud. Ah, she could see why so many women fell under Kevay's influence so easily. And she had to admit, she couldn't blame them one bit. Subconsciously she shifted to sit on his lap properly, her blush bright red on her cheeks as she moved her hands to the buttons of his shirt. Later. She'd think later.
