"Here to... to thank you?" Lexie's voice was small and girlish in the decaying living-room, the jester looking around it with wide eyes. It was repulsive, mould growing along the walls and heaps of cobwebs hanging down from the corners, everything coated in a thick layer of dust and grime. She took in the velvet sofa, damp and rotting, and then took in the woman whose presence suited the place so well it was frightening. She took an involuntary step back towards the door, having to breathe in shallow breaths through her mouth to avoid filling her lungs with the stench of foul rot, observing the old woman with equal parts caution and disgust.
She could have easily ran away. In all honestly, she was really thinking about it. But then... then that thing began to talk.
Lies lies lies then he left and it was lonely. He will be the lonely one now, shall we see how he likes it?
Oh, God. She had known Kevay. This woman, who ever she was or had been, she had been seduced by the cupid and... look at her now. She was completely insane, and undoubtedly dangerous, Lexie's breath catching in her throat. Is this what happened to people after Kevay had discarded them? She was torn, and she had no idea who she felt more sorry for.
Eventually, though, the pressing matters forced themselves down upon her shoulders again, invading her thoughts. She needed to find out where Kevay was, and she needed to do it now. By the sounds of it the crazy old bat had had him spirited away, and he was alone...? That didn't exactly sound like a lethal fate to the jester. "Why?" she asked softly. "Where did you leave him...?"

"Why?" She repeated the question and fell into another bout of manical laughter, wheezing by the time that she was finished, her gaze snapping back to Lexie, looking fevoured. "Do you not know? Not know what he is? Ahhh, poor child. Ma cherie, I really did save you." She smiled to Lexie, revealing broken and rotting teeth. "He is love." She whispered, as though it were a huge secret. "He is love, and love cannot live alone. He will die, die all alone in the forest. Curled up and unloved, he will shrivel up and DIE!" She seemed exstatic about this, waving her arms out wide before they fell back to her dies, a cloud of dust raising up from the cushions as she gazed off into space. Kevay would die, she had had a long time to plan, to plot her revenge, and now, finally, she could enjoy it before she died.
"Where? Ah, ma cherie, does it matter?" She asked, tutting at her and shaking her head. "Does it matter that he is to die out alone in the woods a day's ride from here, in an abandoned hunting cabin? No, no, it is of no matter. Rest assured, he will die."

What little colour there was left in Lexie's face all but drained away as the deranged old woman explained the situation to her, the jester taking another step back, looking close to fleeing out of the place as fast as her legs could take her. No, she needed to listen to this, it was important. It was a matter of life or death. "...Die?" the word came out as a whisper, Lexie putting a hand over her mouth again as her jaw dropped. Kevay would die out there? He'd die if he was alone? But... he hated being alone, being alone had made him crazy before, what the hell was going to happen to him now? Would he just die because he was alone, or because the darkness he thought was everywhere had finally come to get him? The jester was shaking without even really realising what was going on, unable to look away from the insane Mademoiselle Chanteloup.
Rest assured, he will die. "No." she mumbled, shaking her head defiantly, blinking back tears. She was pretty freaked out currently, stumbling back again. Then she simply turned and fled, dashing out of the living-room and back down the corridor, shoving past the aged old butler without caring. The stench of the place and the dust that rose up from the floorboards as she ran was sickening, Lexie always reminded of the way that decrepit old woman just sat there and looked genuinely, frighteningly happy at the fact that she was killing someone.
Lexie wrenched open the door to the house and staggered out, running down the street and not stopping for a good few minutes, eventually collapsing against the wall in an alley-way, coughing uncontrollably and crying without realising that the tears were rolling down her cheeks. Oh, God, he was going to die. And the image of Mademoiselle Chanteloup cackling away in her insanity, with her rotting teeth and her mildewed home, seemed to be burned into her mind. The picture just wouldn't go away, no matter how many times she blinked. It was there, hiding behind her eyelids, a wheezing, cackling laugh that echoed wickedly into the darkness.
Before she knew what was happening, Lexie had turned and thrown up in the alley-way, coughing and shaking violently as she tried to force herself to figure out what was going on. Romano was living on borrowed time. So was Kevay. Both of them were going to be dead if she didn't do something. But she didn't know what to do. Kevay was a day's ride away, and Romano's execution...
Lexie did the only thing she knew how to do at this moment in time. She wiped her mouth on a handkerchief, collapsed back against the wall opposite, slumped down and wept. Her knees were pulled up to her chest so she could rest her forehead on her arms, her sobs muffled so that nobody would come into the alley and look for her. She didn't know how long it went on, but eventually she looked up, wiping at her eyes even though it made no difference.
Something glinted out of the corner of her eye. She gazed down the alley-way. A few feet away lay a small package, a few delicate ribbons poking out from where it had been torn open, as well as glinting silver bells. Lexie didn't know how she knew where they were from. But somehow, seeing them made her force herself to her feet, collecting them from the stones. Kevay.
"Abandoned hunting cabin in the woods. A day's ride from here." she repeated. She didn't know in which direction, in what woods, or where exactly the cabin would be. But that wouldn't stop her. She took a deep breath, let it out again, and marched out of the alley-way towards the carriages.

Kevay was unaware of how long had passed when he came around but he knew that his head hurt like Hell. Everything took a while to come into focus, at first he assumed that he had been robbed, hit over the head in an alley and all of his valuables stolen, but, as everything start to fliter through, he could only wish that he had been robbed.
The first thing that he noticed was the smell. It smelt old and unused, like dust and mould, the stench sticking to the back of his throat, feeling as though it were sufficating him, Kevay coughing as he pushed himself to sit up. Streets didn't smell like that. It was dim when he opened his eyes, the cupid finding himself in a small room. Floorboards were missing here and there, a thick layer of dust and mould coating the rotting wood. The furniture was gone save a tattered, dirty blanket in the corner, windows boarded up so only shafts of sunlight flitered in through the gaps. And it was quiet, deadly quiet, far too quiet to be anywhere in a town, or in a city. Where was he?
It was over a day since he had woken up and his voice was hoarse from shouting. He was curled up in a corner, hugging his knee's tightly, eyes wide as he watched the shadows that swirled around him. It was so very alone here, there was no-one, he coul feel no-one close by. He had felt drained when he woke up, but now he felt like death. He was pale and shivering, his eyes dark, skin covered with a thin layer of sweat. Alone, he was so alone. Was there no-one there to love him? Someone always loved him...
"Please..." He mumbled, chin resting on his knees, looking delirious as he watched the door. "Please love me. I will love you, just don't leave me alone."

Lexie was completely, hopelessly lost. This truth wasn't a welcome one; she couldn't afford to be lost right now, the little jester ducking through branches and hopping over small fallen trees, seeming like some brightly coloured Bambi as she almost fled through the woods. It had been at least a day since she'd managed to get to the carriages, probably even longer, considering that the majority of carriage drivers didn't have a complete plan in their mind of where to go when someone told them to 'take me to some woods where there's a hunting cabin' and 'the cabin probably hasn't been used for a while so it'll be hard to find'.
But Lexie could be forgiven, surely. She had panicked.
She was still panicking, in fact, fighting to catch her breath as she paused in a clearing, spinning on heel to try and see the pathway through the canopy of trees. It was just green, it was all just green. Her eyes darted around again, the jester eventually deciding to make some kind of landmark. She untied one of the ribbons Kevay had been planning to give her from her wrist (where she had tied them for safekeeping, as there hadn't really been much time to do her hair) and looped it around a twig on a low overhanging branch. The bells jingled merrily, a total contrast to how she felt inside.
Then she set off again, running, calling Kevay's name and praying that she was even in the right area of woodland, let alone anywhere close.
Then she saw the cabin.
It was old, almost falling to pieces; the roof looked unstable and it was covered in moss and ivy. Lexie's breath caught in her throat.
"Kevay!" she yelled, running with a new energy and almost running straight into the door of the cabin, which wasn't a good idea considering that it was completely solid, and obviously wasn't falling apart like the rest of the thing. "Kevay, it's me!" she hammered on the door, kicked it and shouldered it, but it only budged a little. Oh, not today. It took a long time, but eventually she got the door to fly open, staggering inside with it.
She took a second to try and gain her composure; her blonde hair was windswept from running and there was moss all over her hands (which she swiftly brushed off) before looking around the cabin, breathing fast. Her eyes widened when she spotted the cupid; she'd almost convinced herself that she would have come all this way and found the wrong cabin in the wrong woods. That's how things usually worked, wasn't it?
"Oh, Kevay..." she shook her head, putting her hand over her mouth and stepping back a little, tears stinging at her eyes. He was in a bad way. What if she'd been any later? She swept down in front of him on her knees, putting a hand on each of his shoulders. "Can you hear me...? I'm here now, I found you."

He was going mad, going stir crazy from being locked up in this dark, damp room for so long. The sound of Lexie's voice was, however, a rather pleasant delusion. He was so lonely that his mind was inventing someone for him to talk to, someone to come save him? Either that or it was masking the true voice, making them sound like a friend, like his jester, while really they were coming to chop out his heart. "I don't want to die." He mumbled to himself, rocking in his corner, feeling the whole cabin shake as the door rattled. They were trying to get in! Who was trying to get in? Could be anyone, any number of monsters. The darkness was here, swirling around him, threatening to consume him if he took too deep a breath, if he let his guard down. No, no, no. He wasn't letting the darkness have him. This monster, however, was another thing entierly.
"Go away." His voice was weak and trembling, the cupid curling up tighter in his corner, turning away as the door burst open, the light blinding him. The movement from the door sent clouds of dust up into the air making him cough, settling over his shoulders and in his hair. "No, you can't have it. It's mine. Mine, mine, mine. I don't want to die." He was trembling all over again, still too dazzled by the light to make out the figure in the doorway, still assuming that his mind was playing tricks on him.
He flinched as she came closer to him, turning his head away, eyes pressed tightly closed. If he couldn't see it then it wasn't real, it wasn't real and it couldn't hurt him. It was, however, the softness of her voice that soothed his panic, the tones of concern that not even his mind could recreate. His azure eyes were wide as he turned his head to look at her, blinking at her and staring at her for a long moment, almost as though he didn't recognise her. "...Lexie?" Tears were streaming down his face leaving trails of clean amongst the dirt that had settled there. It was her, it was his Lexie! His swallow, his light.
"Lexie." There was desperation in his voice as he suddenly moved to throw his arms around her and cling to her, his face nuzzled against her neck, whole body trembling. "Are you real? Please tell me that you are real because they are here and they are coming and I'm so lonely. So lonely, Lexie. I think I'm dying."

She looked close to tears herself when he looked away from her, Lexie biting her lip as if unsure how to convince him that she wasn't something that was coming to get him. He was terrified, that was obvious, completely out of his mind with fear, and there was little she could do. If he didn't believe it was her then he'd die here, in front of her, and there wouldn't be a thing she could do about it. "You aren't going to die, I won't let you." she shook her head, looking him over as if to check he wasn't hurt in any other way. A faint blush rose to her cheeks, which she promptly fought off. How could someone who looked in such a state still be so gorgeous? Even panicked and frightened and feverish, covered in dust and dirt and in tears, Kevay was still the best looking thing Lexie had ever seen.
How twisted was that?
"Yeah, it's me. I came for you..." she gave him a watery smile, nodding in confirmation as he looked at her, reaching out to brush some of the dust out of his hair and wipe the tears from his cheeks, cleaning away a little of the dirt with them.
She pressed her eyes closed as he hugged her, biting back a sob and putting her arms around him to hug him back protectively, as though anything he was afraid of could be fought away by her embrace. She turned her head so she could whisper to him softly, trying to chase away his trembling. "I'm real, I promise." she told him gently, "I'm real, you don't have to be lonely any more. They're not here, they aren't coming. It's just you and me, Kevay." she murmured, shifting ever so slightly to kiss his cheek, stroking his hair. "You're not dying, you're not. I'm gonna stay here with you, so you aren't lonely any more." she assured him.
She rubbed his back to try and warm him up, shuffling to lean back against the walls of the cabin, not letting go of him even a little. Lexie was crying now too, but in relief. "I'm so glad I found you before it was too late. I was scared... you can't die, I love you." she shook her head.

Her embrace could chase everything away. He felt safe in her arms, curling up as small as he could manage, as though attempting to hide himself away. He was clinging onto her, his knuckles turning white from how tightly he was holding onto her shirt. She was his light, chasing off the darkness that had been closing in. Lexie was there, Lexie was there, he wasn't alone any longer. He could feel her presence as though it lit a flame inside him, as though it inspired his body back to life. The numbing cold that had settled over his limbs was lifting, his flesh reanimating, a little of the dull clearing from his eyes. It was surprising how quickly her presence was affecting him, filtering through the fear to find him, pushing the dark away. Lexie was there, and if she was there then everything would be alright.
"You came for me." He agreed, nuzzling his face against her neck, not caring what kind of a state either of them were in. All that mattered was that she was there, all that mattered was that she had come. It hadn't even occurred to him to wonder how she had found him, all that mattered was that she had and that she was there. In her arms, he decided, was the safest place in the world.
"S'just you and me?" He asked, shifting just a little to peek around her, eyes wide as they flitted around the room, checking the corners for the monsters that his mind had conjured up. "It's just you and me." He sighed in relief, hiding his face away again, seeming to relax in her arms as he realised this, the tension draining out of him. The cupid was still trembling, but now it came from cold and exhaution rather than terror.
A smile touched to his features a she told him that she loved him, Kevay nuzzling her briefly, placing a soft kiss on the side of his neck as he grip on her tightened just a little. "I love you too, Lexie. I'm so glad you came t0 save me. You're not a swallow, you're an angel."

"An angel...?" she mumbled, managing a weak laugh, "Hardly, don't be silly Kevay. I almost didn't make it in time, I got lost. But I'm here now, so no more thinking about that." she shook her head and shuddered. If she hadn't gotten there in time... she didn't want to think what would have happened. All that mattered was that Kevay was safe now, and by the way he seemed to brighten almost immediately from her presence, she got the feeling that she'd arrived right in the nick of time. She was blushing brightly as he told her that he loved her too, not having been quite expecting that. She smiled happily nonetheless as he kissed her neck, the jester hugging him closer to her, resting her head on top of his and tugging at the cloak she'd been wearing to wrap it around him as well, as if to help him warm up.
"I'm glad you're safe... she said... she said you'd die if you were left all by yourself." she closed her eyes and frowned, shifting to kiss his forehead before settling back against the wall. She wasn't planning on going anywhere immediately. She needed time to make her heartbeat slow down and to remember where she was and get used to the idea that everything was all right. And she figured that Kevay would need some time to recuperate as well, she'd never seen anyone in such a state before.
She didn't know how long they stayed like that, curled up under the cloak, but all Lexie knew was that she didn't particularly want to move. The cabin might be old and decaying and deathly quiet, but she'd managed to find Kevay there, and she'd probably get them lost trying to find a way out of the woods anyway. Prolonging their trip through the forestry sounded like a really good idea right now.
"Thank you..." she mumbled after a while, smiling softly and nuzzling him a little. "For my present. The ribbons, I found them in the alley-way. I figured that they were from you... was I right?" she asked, shuffling to look down at him, brushing his hair out of his face and smiling softly.

He didn't want to think about what would have happened if she hadn't found him in time, or if she hadn't found him at all. This room would have been...no. No, he refused to think about that, he didn't want to think about things like that. It hadn't happened. Lexie was there, she had found him, she had got there in time and she had saved him. What more could he want? "I would." He confirmed shuddering at the mention of she, that was something else that he was making a point of not thinking about. His mental state was in enough of a mess right now, he couldn't risk pushing himself right over the edge. "Can't be alone, can't survive without love. Doesn't matter, you're here. You saved me." He whispered against her neck, his eyes closed now. He was exhausted, but he didn't want to sleep, too scared that she wouldn't be there when he woke up. He wouldn't be able to deal with that.
He shifted with her as she moved to lean back against the wall, shuffling (if possible) closer to her as she wrapped her cloak around the pair of them. "I'm so cold, Lexie." He told her, absently playing with the tips of her hair. "Don't like being cold. Tired too, can't sleep though, not safe here." He shook his head, sighing to himself heavily. He didn't want to move yet, he was far too comfortable in her arms, but he didn't want to stay in this cabin for too long. He wanted to be back in a loud city, all the sounds of nature drown out by the clammour of voices. Nature, suddenly it didn't seem as beautiful as it usualy did, too dark, too many places for things to hide. It seemed full of menace.
"You found them?" He smiled faintly, glancing up at her. "Did you like them? I thought that they would make you feel better. Did they make you feel better?"

She paled as he confirmed what she already knew to be true, that without people he would undoubtedly wither away and die. She rested her head on top of his again, frowning and closing her eyes. "Well you don't have to worry, 'cause I won't leave you alone here. I'll be here, promise." she nodded to him, curling up further under the cloak with him and rubbing his arms as he said he was cold. "We'll warm you up, Kevay. And we'll get to a town, where you can sleep as long as you want. But let's just sit here a little while longer... please...?" she murmured, closing her eyes and sighing softly, somehow managing to feel comfortable there, a light blush dusting across her cheeks.
"They did make me feel better." she nodded to him, smiling. "I loved them, thank you. I was lucky to find them again. Hopefully they'll be able to help us get out of here. I looped one around a branch as a landmark." she told him, glancing up eventually to look around the cabin. No, she didn't like it here one bit. She could almost sense his panic in the place, the nightmare that he'd been suffering through until she'd found him.
"I think I'm ready to go now." she murmured, sitting up a little and taking his hands in hers. "We'll go to the town just outside the woods, okay? Me and you, and we'll get you all fixed up." she promised, taking off her cloak to drape it around his shoulders, pinning it together and resting her hand on his cheek. "I know you're tired, but can you walk? It's not too far, I don't think. Maybe an hour at the most." she assured him. "And I'll be there too, we can just walk and then it'll be over." she took his hands again and rose to her feet, tugging him gently with her, though he'd have to help; she wasn't that strong.

"We can sit here a little while." He nodded to her in confirmation. It wasn't really that he wanted to stay there, he had spent long enough in that cabin to last him his entire lifetime, but he wasn't all that sure that he would be able to stand up, not just yet. He felt stronger than he had, the feeling that he would pass out and never wake up had passed as Lexie put her arms around him, but he still felt shaky and weak. He needed time to try and pull himself together, to reign in his panic and fear and get them under control before they ventured outside. He didn't know how far it would be to the next patch of civilisation, but he knew that it would take an eternity to get there if he was constantly looking back over his shoulder to make sure that there wasn't some monster lumbering after them.
He was silent until she spoke again, sat with his head on her shoulder, gaze fixed on the door. He shifted as she moved, cautiously sitting back to look up at her. "Okay, and I hope they can get us safe too, I'm glad that you like them." He smiled faintly, watching her as she rose to her feet, looing unsure as to whether he would be able to stand up or not. "I'll try my best." He nodded, reaching up to take her hand and hauling himself to his feet. At first he was shaky, his legs feeling like jelly beneath him, the cupid reaching out to rest his hands on her shoulders while he found his balance, waiting patiently for his dizzy spell to pass. "Ok...ok...don't run off and leave me. Let's take it easy, so I can keep up?"

She smiled at him softly as he put his hands on her shoulders, resting her hands on top of his to help steady him, afraid he would just fall back over if they weren't careful. "I wouldn't run off and leave you. C'mon, let's get out of here. This place gives me the creeps." she narrowed her eyes as she looked around, moving to put an arm around Kevay's waist to make sure they were walking at the same pace. That and she didn't want him to trip over on the way out of the woods. Lexie wasn't exactly drained of energy and even she had fallen once or twice as she'd picked her way through the trail. "Okay. Ready? Let's go." she nodded.
It was slow going, but the jester didn't mind that. She had gotten herself lost on the way, and the comparatively leisurely stroll through the woods gave her time to try and check where they were and if she recognised anything about their surroundings. "Hey, there it is..." she smiled suddenly, pointing with her free hand to the ribbon just above them, reaching up to loosen it and tie it around her wrist again. She'd sort out the ribbons properly when they reached some form of civilisation. Actually, getting out of the woods before anything would probably be best.
It took just over an hour just to get away from the solid greens of the forestry, Lexie having been making quiet conversation so that the quiet wasn't so oppressive and eerie. As they emerged onto the dirt trail there was a distant sound from the bustle of a marketplace in the distance, of horses' steps and the rumble of carriages. They were on a small hilltop, which dipped down into a tiny village just below them. It wasn't much, but it would have an inn and a market and food. And people. "Looks happy enough." she smiled up at the cupid, starting to walk them down the trail to the village.

"Creepier in the dark." He mumbled, a shudder shaking his body at that memory, though this was swiftly pressed to the back of his mind as they started walking. At first his legs were stiff from being sat curled up in that corner for so long, he would have sworn that he could hear his joints creaking as his legs moved. He was leaning heavily on Lexie, gaze down on his feet to make sure that he didn't end up tripping himself up on some hidden branch. If he fell to the floor he wasn't sure that he would have the energy to drag himself back to his feet. Lexie's presence may have brought him back from the brink of death, but she alone wasn't enough to pull him back to full strength, not with the state that he was in. He needed a town filled with people, needed to surround himself with love to recover properly. For now, however, he wasn't complaining. He was happy to have company, and he could think of no better company than Lexie.
He looked up as she pointed, a smile ghosting over his features as he spotted the brightly coloured ribbons fluttering in the breeze. "We're going the right way." He murmured, sounding exhausted but happy. The right way, that was all he needed to know. They were going the right way, there was civilisation out there somewhere, and they were heading towards it. In times like this it was better to cling onto small hopes, otherwise he would just collapse in the undergrowth and have neither the motivation nor the strength to get back to his feet.
Kevay had let her do most of the talking while they walked, joining in here and there with a brief comment, mostly he just found the found of her voice comforting. At first he had thought that he was hearing things when he started to hear the sounds of the town, unconsciously speeding up a little. "We made it." He whispered as they emerged from the tree's on the top of the hill, pausing to look down at the village, smiling to himself tiredly, the breeze making his hair flutter around his face. He looked a state, but he, thankfully, hadn't realised this. There was sure to be another breakdown when he realised how bad he looked and how dirty he was, and he wasn't sure if he had enough left in him to deal with another breakdown.
"She took my money." Kevay mumbled as they started down the gentle slope of the hill, suddenly looking worried. "I can't pay for an inn."

"Yeah, we made it..." Lexie agreed with a smile, glancing up at him as they began to descend into the little village. She patted his arm as he looked worried, shaking her head. "It's all right. I've got enough with me for an inn for a couple of days at least, and for food and a bath and everything. Let me take care of it, okay?" she murmured to him, careful not to mention how he looked. She'd be getting him a bath the second they were in the inn, half because he admittedly looked a state, and half because she didn't want to give him a chance to notice himself and fly into a panic. He'd probably die of exhaustion if he did that.
Soon enough they were walking from the dirt trail and onto the dainty cobblestones of the village, people meandering around them. Lexie led them swiftly through the main street, smiling at the welcome sounds of voices and the peals of laughter of the children who ran at their heels. "There it is." she smiled happily, looking up at the swinging sign for the inn above their heads, pausing to glance around. Despite Kevay's fragile appearance, he was already getting quite a lot of attention. Good attention. A group of giggling young women next to the small, meagre fountain in the square were watching him eagerly, blushing as they whispered to one another.
The village may not be huge, teeming with people and crowds for Kevay to attract to himself, but it had its small joys. And there were several couples wandering around too, all looking relatively happy. That might help.
"We'll go out tomorrow, and you can sit and be surrounded with adoring fans and love." she murmured to him, giggling as they walked to the inn, the cupid turning more and more heads, earning appreciative stares and even a faint or two. Who knew what would happen when he looked like himself again. Lexie was afraid he'd get raped. The innkeeper's daughter (why did all of these innkeepers have young, impressionable daughters anyway?) looked stunned as they shuffled inside, the jester walking them to the desk and offering a bright smile to the man behind the bar.
She ordered them a room and a bath, which he was all too happy to give to them providing that they walked away and Kevay stopped causing his daughter to turn to jelly. He looked awful, why was she falling all over herself?
