Kevin was closing in on her with every long, quick stride. He reached out, almost close enough to grab at her shoulder or hair and pull her back.
"Come no closer!" a man's voice ordered in Hagakarinese. A blinding ball of light flew in front of Kevin and merged with Amaya, giving her a strong glow that flared in his infrared vision. He hissed viciously, stopped in his tracks and leapt back a few yards, holding his hands over his eyes.
Another glowing figure entered the scene, a Hagakarinese man dressed in a black robe with a katana in one hand and the other glowing even brighter than himself an Amaya; obviously the source of the light spell. He quickly stooped beside her, lifting her arm over his shoulders to give her extra strength as they approached the cottage door.
"Rain, are you well?" he asked as the vampires backed away.
"How did he get here without our noticing?"
"Seems you were too preoccupied with letting the traitor attack her!"
"We had scouts set up! How did this happen?"
The answer to that question would have been that Yasakazu had killed them, but he was too worried about Amaya to even hear their snarling.

The slayer was more than willing to half collapse against Yasakazu as he appeared at her side. She had felt Jagger's fingertips brush past her shoulder and then he seemed to have dropped back, her friend obviously the cause of that. Ahhh, now she was glad that she had shown him where this cottage was, she should have realised that he would come looking for her. Stupid Amaya had been too focused on what she had lost rather than what she still had left.
"Doesn't....matter...door." She was still breathing heavily, pain written across her features but she wouldn't admit to that, not even to Yasakazu. "Inside safe." She nodded, half dragging him as she moved to the door, making sure that he came with her as she finally pressed her bloodied palm to the door, the door sprining open so that Amaya could tumble inside. She dropped her sword to the ground inside the cottage, reaching out to grab his hand and tug him inside before slamming the door shut with the last of her energy, sliding down then to sit on the floor and catch her breath.
Her head was bowed, hands on the ground in front of her to hold her steady as she gulped in oxygen, steadily regaining control. Her hair hung around her like a bloodied curtain, leg glistening with blood in the soft candle light, Amaya wincing in pain as she touched her fingertips to the wound breifly, suddenly turning her attention up to her friend, scowling at him ever so slightly.
"Zu, what the hell took you so long?!?!? I know you like dramatic entrance's but I almost DIED!" Ahhh, typical Amaya, shouting first, thank you later.

As soon as they were safely inside, the light that made himself and Amaya glow left them, turning into orbs of light and fluttering into his still-glowing hand, which then faded. He smiled as she yelled at him. He let out a quiet laugh.
"Yes, I see now that you're well enough to scream at me," he said, his voice a quiet contrast to hers as the vampires yelled outside about what they should do. "There'll be plenty of time for that later, Rain. First I need to have a look at your wounds." He smacked his hands together and they were glowing again, this light not yellow as the other had been but bluish-white.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The vampires had been so confused, so busy yelling at each other and wondering what had happened to notice that Kevin had left to seek other prey. It wasn't until moments later that someone asked: "Now, where'd the traitor go?" The vampires looked around, some cursed. They began arguing about what to do. It was finally decided that three-fourths of the vampires would go to kill him and the others would watch the cottage, though they hardly expected Amaya to be moving anytime soon. Two of those that were left to guard the cottage went to report in Idaitokai.
Kevin was on a dead run through the forest. It wouldn't be long, just a couple miles, until he reached a village. His extra-sensitivity to the scent of blood was leading him. There was so much of it that it was irresistible. None but the fastest vampires would catch up to him until he came to the village.

She rolled her eyes at him and pouted ever so lightly, distrust dancing through them as his hands lit up. She disliked magic, and only tolerated it when it was absolutly necessary. "Must you? It will heal on it's own...eventually." She huffed, looking away from him and down at her leg. She was in a huge ammount of pain, so much so that you could see it in that those amber eyes of hers, and she knew that her leg wouldn't heal anytime soon, and by the time it healed naturally they would have starved to death; however she was still reluctant to let him heal her.
The idea that Jagger wouldn't like Zu also flickered through her mind, though that didn't last long. She wasn't even sure that he would come back after he had fed, and as much as she hoped that he would return she knew that it would be difficult with all these vampires hanging around.

"Would you give the vampires time to call in reinforcements while you wait for your wounds to heal?" Yasakazu inquired, cocking an eyebrow, but smiling at her pout. Oh, how she looked gorgeous when she pouted. "Or perhaps we could try and make our escape tomorrow morning and they could just follow the scent of your blood to wherever we choose to go by night?" He knew that she knew there was no other option, but he also knew that it would still take those words to persuade her. "I'll just heal you up a bit, we'll get some sleep, and leave tomorrow morning." He reached forward to touch her stomach slowly, giving her the time to resist him if she had a better idea that didn't involve magic.

Kevin was nearing the village, growing stronger, faster, and more ignorant of his pain as he breathed the scent of mortal blood in. The trees were thinning and he could see a dim light in the distance; no doubt the torchlit paths. A few of the fastest vampires were gaining on him, but he ignored anything that hinted at this. His only concern was feeding his thirst.

She knew full well that there was no other option, but she would still demand that he pointed out ever reason why he had to heal her before letting him do it; Amaya was just awkward like that. "Fine." She sighed, looking away from him, still pouting. "But you better hurry up because if you take too long I'm stopping you and you better come up with a better plan." She told him bluntly, her hand resting over his wrist lightly so that se could shove him away when she was fed up of being healed.
Her other hand was on the ground next to her, fingers drumming over the wooden floor. "And then I can sleep in my room and you can stay safely out here." She added in there; she just had to make these things clear with Zu. She wouldn't be surprised if he found some excuse to demand to sleep with her really, as if it wouldn't be safe for her in her bedroom alone. "I need to stay up and wait for a friend coming back anyway." She nodded to him, looking slightly shifty.

Yasakazu placed his hands on his stomach, the bluish-white light glowing even more fervently after it had made contact with its target. The glow spread faintly throughout her body for only a few seconds before he pulled away. The spell would close her wounds immediately and they would heal backwards - from the inside-out. He had set it up so that it would toll on his strength, not hers.
"You should rest," Yasakazu said, proving Amaya's suspicions true. "Why don't you stay out here with me and sleep? I can wake you when your friend... Wait, what?" He looked a little bewildered and instantly took on a tone of irritation and reverted back to Hagakarinese rather than Common, obviously suspecting that this friend was a male. "Rain, who is this friend of yours? Why wasn't he protecting you? And how do you expect he'll return with the vampiric vigil out there?"
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Kevin had reached the village's edge, but he was overtaken by two vampires, both of which were killed easily in his bloodrage. They had been stupid to attack alone, but they were in a panic. Panic made vampires do stupid things.
The groans and yell of the two vampires had attracted a young couple. They opened their door, the wife peering out and the husband being so bold as to venture into the yard holding a woodcutting axe. Within a second, Kevin had sunk his teeth into the man's neck, tearing it apart and beginning to drink. If he hadn't been in a bloodraging state, then he would have been so smart as to kill them both before feeding, but he was in a bloodraging state, and so the woman started screaming madly as the axe fell to the ground and her husband's body went limp.

She wrinkled her nose up as the blue light surrounded her in an adorably spoilt and arrogant gesture. Zu knew her well enough to know how she would react, and he she know that he would receive a thank you when she saw it fit to give him one. Her wounds tingled as they began to heal, the first thing that happened being that the bleeding stopped, not that this mattered seeing as she had lost of blood and was currently light headed anyway. She gave him a remarkably innocent look as he asked about her friend, smirking at him a little. "Who said that my friend was a he?" She arched her eyebrow at him, the look in her eyes challenging and really rather mischievious. She just couldn't help teasing Zu sometimes. "It is complicated, he was protecting me. He will be back when he is himself again, he can deal with the vampires." She assured him before shaking her head. "And I am perfectly capable of sleeping on my own, but I will wait for my friend to get back first."

"When he's himself?" Yasakazu repeated. He had to force himself to stay focused on this man, this threat instead of how wonderful it was when she toyed with him. "What? Is he mad?" He frowned. "If you and I couldn't deal with those vampires, what makes you think he can? He'll be dead before he even touches the door. He didn't like this, not at all. Another man? "We should leave in the morning whether he returns by then or not." He stood up, sulking as he walked over to the cushions surrounding a table and slumped into them.
"Hmf," he muttered bitterly. "Friend is he? How come I've never met him?" Most men, in his position, would be very curious, especially after Amaya's vague response, but he was only worried. Oh, and agitated, too.
More villagers were coming out of their houses by the time Kevin had finished off both the husband and wife. He was becoming satisfied now, his senses slowly returning to him, and he knew enough that he had to get out of there. However, other vampires were now stampeding into the village, killing any resident that got in their way and even some who didn't. Kevin didn't rightly know what he should do, but his mind was gearing itself into a web of ideas. He was back fully now, his mind clear. He knew that Amaya had got away, though he didn't remember it, simply because he didn't smell her blood.
"I can't run back, they'll just follow me and wait outside the cottage, it'll only endanger her," he said under his breath. "I have to fight." He clenched his hands and bared his teeth.

She smiled to him in that coy manner of hers, shaking her head at him as he walked away from her. "I suppose he was mad yes, but vampires are generally mad when they are thirsting." Her comment was said in such an off hand manner that anyone would have thought that she was talking about the most general and normal of topics, not admitting that she was friends with the enemy. "He will deal with the vampires, I am sure of that." She added in there as she stretched out carefully, sighing as she looked down at herself. Ugh, she was a mess again. She needed to wash and change, the only problem in that being that they still had no water.
"You are being silly and jealous now Zu. I will not leave without him." She told him in a mocking tone, sincing ever so slightly as she pushed herself to her feet, struggling a little as she limped across the room to settle opposite him amongst the cushions seeing as it was much more comfortable. "You have not met him because he is a new friend, and I would have thought that you would be greatful to him; he has saved my life twice now." She tilted her head at him a little, biting her lover lip ever so slightly as she looked at him. "And you wouldn't want me to be dead, would you?"

"A thirsty vampire?!" Yasakazu exclaimed loudly, hopping to his feet and staring at her in disbelief. "Your 'new friend' is a thirsting vampire? Rain, what is wrong in that little head of yours? Has he brainwashed you? Or you're jesting? Rain, please, tell me that you jest. Vampires don't save lives, they destroy them. Vampires don't even have lives of their own to speak of. Please, tell me you're playing." He stared at her expectantly, but knew her well enough that, if she was jesting, she wouldn't have said it like that. He was just simply in denial.

Kevin had sheathed four swords earlier and had only left behind two, therefore he still had two to work with. He also still had the dagger in his boot. He breathed in deeply and decided that the only way he could take this many vampires at this rate was to play a game of hide-and-seek. Like a speeding shadow, he swiftly breezed over the yard and took to hiding behind a fence going around a two-story home. Villagers were screaming, the word "vampires" kept showing up in there somewhere. He would have to kill them as quickly as possible, before they laid waste to the entire village. He inhaled deeply, taking in the familiar scents; there was a vampire coming his way, obviously smelling the blood on his shirt. No, there were two. He waited as they drew closer, almost to the fence, and then leapt out from behind the fence, shoving a sword in each of their faces. He ripped them out and then beheaded the vampires before running to find another hiding place, having to take off the head of another vampire, feeding, as he did so.

Amaya looked up at him as if he were crazy, tilting her head to the side a little as she arched an eyebrow at him, as if to ask him what the hell he was doing. "He was thirsting just them because he was trying to protect me. Believe it or not, I do not have to explain myself to you." She pointed out, running her fingers through her hair to try and comb out some of the drying blood. She had expected this kind of reaction from Yasakazu, if she were in his position she would hve just laughed in his face...but had happened in the last twenty-four hours and her perspective on the world had shifted a little. She found herself wishing that Jagger would just hurry himself up and get back here, and she was actually worrying about him. He had hurt himself for her, and he must be going through right now because he had paused to try and save her from himself instead of listening to his thirst and simply killing her. If only she had been stronger and faster, none of this would have happened, but she had never expected such strong vampires being sent after her. She couldn't understand why they were going to such trouble to kill her. "Zu, I'm in no mood to argue with you so will you please just sit down and calm down. I am tired and I can do without you shouting at me."

Yasakazu sat back down next to Amaya, trying to take her advice and calm down a bit. Is she insane? he screamed mentally. He propped an elbow on his knee and pressed his palm to his forehead. Holding company with one of... them? Amaya Ashikawa using a vampire for protection - unthinkable! He's probably just waiting for the right moment to take advantage of her, kill her, turn her, or whatever else he might be conversing about with the other vampires right now. Well, I'll be damned if he lays so much as a finger on her! He just sat there, in shock, thinking about all the things he wished to do to Kevin if he showed up while hoping that he didn't.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Meanwhile, the game of hide-and-seek was working out brilliantly for Kevin. He had killed over half of the vampires, hiding behind buildings, bushes in gardens, trees, and fences. They soon began to catch onto his game and the cut on his leg was becoming increasingly painful and hindering in his movements. It was a good thing there weren't many left. He faced off with the last four of them; they surrounded him as he ran, forgetting their villager quarry.
"We had hoped to flush you out by attacking the villagers," one vampire said in a frigid voice. Kevin recognized the iciness; it was normally present in his voice, too. "Since you appear to have a soft spot for the Ashikawa girl, we thought that you might for these. But you feasted on two of them, didn't you? They were dead before we arrived." He stared at Kevin for a moment and Kevin's glare was fiery and horrible, such a glare that few had ever achieved from him. "Now tell me, what brings you to do such a thing? I thought it was lunacy, but while you fight like a lunatic, you seem to be rather logical. Have you fallen for the girl? That persistent, mortal wench." Kevin's face twitched just a bit.
"Daisuke Ashikawa was a friend of mine," Kevin finally replied, staring angrily at the ground. The vampire that had been speaking raised his eyebrows. He moved that terrifying glare to the vampire's face slowly. "I had to behead him myself, because the filth that attacked him didn't have the decency to do it." He clenched his teeth. "I will not show you the same treatment." And, with that, they were fighting. Kevin feinted as if he was going to attack the one that had been speaking and then moved to the left at the last second, shoving a sword in the chest of one of his companions and leaving it there to burn as he moved on to obstruct the oncoming blows from the incinerating vampire's fellows.

"Must you sit and sulk?" She sighed a little as she turned her gaze to him once again, seeming rather annoyed with him. "As if I haven't been through enough in the past few days, I now have to put up with your disapproval?" She was giving him an intense look, as if demanding that he explained himself to her right then and there and apologised for everything that he was thinking. "The vampire saved me back at the mansion, and he saved me from himself just now...and I am sorry that you disapprove that I am still alive but if you wish that I choose my hero's more carefully then maybe you should have been there." She huffed and turned away from him, as if to tell him that she had nothing else to say to him. Yasakazu annoyed her when he was like this, when he acted so jealous about everyone that she spoke with yet he had no real right to be protective or jealous of her. She wasn't his, they weren't in a relationship and never had been...and yes they may have kissed that once but she had told him that she didn't want to marry him, shouldn't that tell him that she wasn't interested in him that way? He just couldn't get it into his head that she would just be his friend.

"I don't disapprove that you're still alive, Rain, you know that," argued Yasakazu, sitting up straight and staring at her. "I just find it a little odd that a vampire has any sincere wish to save you. I'm glad he did and I wish I had been there, Rain, with all of my heart." His lips grew a bit taut, as if he was holding back some emotion. His face relaxed and he let out a sigh as he turned away, running a hand up his cheek and through his hair, as he did when he was frustrated. "You wanted me to stop going on about the vampire, so I become silent and suddenly you're angry that I'm sulking." Then he ceased all movement, the gears in his head turning.
Amaya's parents weren't there, were they? That could only mean one thing... He turned back to her, his eyes suddenly sympathetic. He wanted to say something, anything, that might be of a comfort, but he knew that Amaya didn't take kindly to others feeling sorry for her. He knew what it was like. They were from wealthy slayer families, why should anyone feel sorry for them? They should never be looked at with anything but envy. He decided that the best course of action would be to simply cease his arguing.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I'll try to trust your judgment." Of course, this was a lie. He wasn't going to try and trust her judgment, but he was going to stop going on about how he didn't. He knew this meant that she'd expect him to be civil to the vampire, whenever he showed up, but he'd have to try.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
While they were chatting in the safety of the cottage, Kevin had just finished severing the leg of one vampire and rendering another weaponless. He picked up the sword from the scorched vampire's remains and tarried off a blow from the one that had spoken to him. He was intentionally saving him for last and it appeared that the vampire realized this. He was fighting frantically, not as cool as he had been before at all. He gasped as his last companion, the legless one, was unarmed and beheaded by Kevin in three swift motions.
"The Ashikawa girl will only kill you when you've become useless to her," the final vampire said, backing away as Kevin advanced on him in slow, deliberate movements.
"Then I suppose I'd do well to make sure that never happens," Kevin said, his voice like the fiery fumes of a volcano right before an eruption.
"Why are you fighting us? You're a vampire, just as we are," the other said, almost whimpering. He frowned, getting the courage to say something a little more offensive. "You're damned no matter what you do. Saving the slayer girl won't help you forget what you are and you'll both be dead before long. You will die for a lost cause."
Kevin did two things in rather quick succession: he dropped the swords and, before they hit the ground, he had taken three long, fast strides so that he was face-to-face with the vampire and ripped the katana out of the man's hand. He tossed it aside. The other dropped to his knees, almost crying.
"Please," he begged.
"I'm not the one who has forgotten what I am," Kevin whispered, grabbing the man's shoulder with one hand and his hair with the other. "Vampires don't deserve to live." He tugged in two different directions with both hands, feeling the man's neck break and then his skin tear. Finally, he had ripped the head loose and tossed it aside.
He thought how like Daisuke he had sounded when he said that last statement as he began to clean the mess, the residents cowering away from him and hiding in their homes, as if doors and locks would save them from Kevin if he had really wanted them.
He drank from one of the villagers that was already dead, trying to insure that his thirst didn't come back for a long while, and beheaded all the bitten residents he could find, dragging their bodies to lie alongside one another behind the dead couple's house. Villagers watched him through their windows.
"Listen," he called out to the residents. "Anyone who has been bitten but isn't amongst the dead should remove their head. It is the only way to prevent them from becoming a vampire. You would be smart to incinerate the bodies behind that house after you've had services for them, just in case." With that, he was gone.
