Out of Character:
Name: Niva
Other characters: Mag, Lady (WIP)
In Character:
Name: Malus Grimm
Aliases: Mal, Grimm, the Angel of Death, Grim Reaper
Age: Old as fuck. (13.7 billion years old)
Race: Celestial Reaper (or cosmic policeman if you will, particularly a Death Inspector)
Gender: Male
Occupation/Class: Grim Reaper, Middleman of Souls
Orientation: Pansexual
Physical Description:
Despite Grimm’s age, he appears to be quite young. He has a thin boyish face, with sharp blue eyes. His cheeks are rounded and his dark hair is always in a tangled mess. The lack of facial hair seems to add to the distinct kid charm on his face. Malus stands at an average height of 5’11” with a lanky build and thin arms. If anything, the Reaper is unintimidating and easy to pass over.
Grimm will wear anything that fits his awkwardly thin frame. He doesn’t have any particular sense of fashion, so it isn’t unusual to find the Reaper dressed in mismatching clothing (as he cannot be bothered with such trivial matters). It’s worth noting he doesn’t wear shoes. He finds them constricting and annoying. Despite the Reaper never wearing shoes, it seems his feet are untouched by the Earth.
Play-By: Gaspard Ulliel
Personality Description:
A Reaper’s personality is a tricky thing to measure in the terms humans give. Grimm has a distinct duty to the world and that is to pass souls between realms. When he is fulfilling this duty, he is capable of melting down his personality to what the particular soul needs. If the soul he is carrying on to the next realm needs a firm, mean hand to give them that final shove, that’s what he’ll be. If they need a caring, gentle and kind hand, than that’s what he’ll be.
However, on his own time, Grimm is childish. With a cheerful and mischievous disposition, he is definitely the kind of person people would like to surround themselves with. He isn’t easy to upset, his fuse could likely wrap around the Earth a few hundred times. With his endless patience, he doesn’t seem bothered by the sufferance of humanity. It’s not that he doesn’t care so much as it is he has a perspective humans aren’t capable of having. Sometimes his indifference to human suffering can rub the wrong way (which is usually why he’s constantly telling jokes or playing tricks on people) and he is perfectly aware it can.
With the conception of humans, Grimm was granted the ability to feel human emotions so he could empathize and better serve as a middle man of souls. Because of this, on occasion he can appear to be euphoric, depressed or angry for no particular reason. These emotions come in rushes and it’s not something he’s ever learned to control. The timing is usually rather random and he likes locking himself up when this does occur.
Alignment: True Neutral
Likes/Dislikes:
Likes: Apples, human music, dancing, bad jokes, playing tricks, books with pictures, art, fiddles, pastries, soup, feeling cold and noodles.
Dislikes: There isn’t anything he really has an utter distaste for.
History:
13.7 billion years is an incredible length of time for a being to exist. Grimm’s history is something that at a first glance can be difficult to absorb. So, to put it simply, the Reaper came about 13.7 billion years ago during the conception of celestial beings. His purpose was predetermined by the cosmic being. To serve and assist her children, Parvati created the first heavenly beings (collectively known as "angels" or "celestials"), imparting them with a tiny spark of divinity. Grimm’s purpose was to carry the souls of any life (animals, microbes, humans, /anything/) and pass them on to their realm of afterlife. In the beginning, there wasn’t much for the Reaper to sort over. However, as the Elder Deities created, his job became more and more complex.
As time passed, obviously Grimm had more and more souls to take. As the influx of souls in his ‘district’ came in, he created ‘puppets’. These puppets served the purpose of gathering souls and transporting them to him. These vessels gathered distinct types of souls. For example, a cat puppet might gather the souls of animals in one particular land and bring them to Grimm. These puppets are capable of nothing more than gathering and transporting souls to Grimm. They usually appear to be somewhat transparent. In some cases, these puppets can be mistaken for ‘ghosts’.
He has always been a distant figure, somewhat invisible. Though around the time of hominids, Grimm took upon a humanly form, knowing it would be easier to pass on souls with such a form. He wanders rather aimlessly, fulfilling his duties in Syrunn. The troubles of Syrunn involved with Umbra has always been irrelevant to him. While he is completely aware of everything that has occurred in Syrunn, he can’t be bothered with it.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths: Being a celestial race has its perks. Grimm for some reason seems to always been untouched by Earthly matter such as dirt. In addition to that, he appears to be eternally youthful, stuck with the appearance of just a young man about 24. Grimm is separate from the trials and tribulations that seem to curse humanity on a whole. He isn’t concerned with Earthly possessions, or war, or power for the most part. As a celestial being, Grimm is immortal. Time stands no chance at weathering him away into nothing; however that doesn’t mean he cannot be killed. He is capable at anytime changing his appearance (which after a thousand years or so can be very handy). And while Grimm may have a human appearance, he is in no way constrained by the limits such as sustenance, sleep or even air. Death by suffocation wouldn’t really work. Hurr.
Most of Grimm’s influence lies with the dead, those beings stuck in death on Syrunn and the passing on of the soul. He is not capable of reverting death by any means. However, he can determine or change the destination of the soul. He is also capable of allowing a soul to exist on Syrunn for an extended time period.
While Grimm’s magic largely applies to that of the dead, he is capable of performing somewhat powerful magic upon the living.
Weaknesses: Grimm like anyone can be killed. It might be a little harder than your average human walking down the street, but it is possible by every means. Additionally, Grimm’s random spouts of emotions have been known to be somewhat debilitating and can on occasion last for days or even weeks. These surges of emotions are overpowering and overwhelming most of the time. More so, with these emotions, he has come to know of human conceptions such as love. These conceptions only seem to bother him during the surges of emotions. Other conceptions such as suicide, power, and war can bother him during these surges as well. As a celestial being, he is incredibly lonely. Time passes and everything dies.
Grimm, much like humans, is bound by certain laws. Humans are constrained by laws, like death and life, or gravity. Grimm’s bound to more cosmic laws. He can’t just go about killing humans or animals or whatever willy-nilly. He has rules to follow. If he doesn’t, he’ll have to answer to deities. This means, at all costs he’d avoid killing anything or anyone. He is aware everything is going to die eventually, but it must die in its own time without his influence.
Magic:
Magic of the Dead: Grimm is capable of many feats with magic when it comes to the dead. As previously mention, he has created puppets (which are magical in essence, mere extensions of himself). These puppets are tethered to Grimm by that of magical threads (which only he can see). He can touch each thread, for each puppet and do various things such as determine the location of the puppet, teleport to said puppet, or harvest the souls gathered by the puppet. These puppets have minimal impact on the world of the living. However, humans can sometimes see these puppets. They are often mistaken for ghosts. While they cannot directly impact the living, Grimm has been known to use them for his tricks he likes to play on humans.
Additionally, he is capable of moving souls around. He cannot fix death, not with his celestial power. (It is plausible for him to learn mortal means of cheating death, but he wouldn’t for any reason do this.) He can tether souls (much like his puppets) to his body and he does this particularly with souls that he does not pass on right away (unfinished business if you will, these are the souls he allows to stay on Syrunn longer). He can determine or even change the destination of the soul, though this doesn’t occur very often.
Magic of the Living: While Grimm may be a celestial being; the range of his influence doesn’t really lie with the living. That isn’t to say he isn’t capable of magic that can affect the living. He has been known to create illusions which can be seen by the living (usually to aid him in his pranks). Additionally, he is capable of teleporting to any conceivable location on Syrunn (mostly to help with the whole Grim Reaper thing).
More so, during his stint in a human form, he has watched humans develop and their mortal magic. This has allowed him to learn basic human magic such as healing and elemental manipulation. He isn’t all that adept at these types of magic, mostly due to his lack of need for it. He does however seem to be exceptionally fast (something he can turn off and on, as sort of a physical augmentation). This magic is something he uses largely to avoid conflict with humans (thus avoiding hurting or killing anyone and anything).
Probably the most important power he is capable of with the living is seeing death. Everything mortal dies eventually. With one touch of the hand, Grimm can see the death of whatever he is touching (plant, animal, human, etc). He is aware that humans are capable of cheating death and this often comes up in whatever he sees when he touches a human. If a human, animal or whatever is in their final moments of life, Grimm is capable of seeing their memories and feeling their emotions if he chooses (this is a great tool for helping humans pass on).
Weapons/Armor/Equipment:
None. He just wears plain old clothing. He’s usually got a haversack full of apples though.
Other: Grimm eats. A lot. And animals are unusually attracted to him.
