Name: Kai
Aliases: Wolf, or White Wolf.
Age: 64, but he looks to be in his mid-twenties.
Race: ½ Wolf Demon, ½ Human
Gender: Male
Occupation/Class: Former Slave/Fighter, now Guardian of the Kashani Sand Snakes guild.
Orientation: Heterosexual
Physical Description:
Half-Breed Form
The first thing people notice about Kai is that his skin is incredibly pale to say that he has spent the large majority of his life in and around the Xyndi Empire. Almost albino in appearance, his hair is long, white and poker straight, with refreshingly icy blue eyes. And most would consider him just that – an outsider in a foreign land – were it not for the more obvious clues that point to his demonic bloodline.
The most minor of these come in the form of a single band of black which circles each of his wrists. And then there are the teeth; wolves are born predators, and Kai’s elongated canines are not to be messed with. They are far from being just for show, too, as he’d use them without hesitation in a fight. The tail is another thing, almost long enough to sweep the floor and covered with thick, snowy fur. And if that’s not enough to make him stick out, the ears top it all off. Ivory tipped with black, unmistakably canine (and irritatingly fluffy, he might add), they stick up from his hair almost like a beacon to say ‘Hey, lookit me, I’m not normal!’
Having being used in the past as a fighter and tempered by years in the guild, Kai is built athletically, with strength, speed and agility in mind. It’s obvious from his every movement that he won’t go down without a good fight. Almost always in the Sand Snake uniform, Kai could be considered handsome, but with an impressive map of scars spanning over his chest and back (along with a prominent, silvery scar which runs diagonally across his face) he falls a little short of the mark.
Demonic Form
Not even Kai knows much about this form – he has only ever changed once or twice, and then he was too angry to remember any of the details. And he takes great pains to stifle his temper, so this form has not appeared in a long while. But when he is agitated (or hurt) enough, Kai transforms into a large white wolf, black markings on the tips of his ears and two black bands of fur around his front paws. Most of his scars are hidden in this form with the exception of the one on his face, which appears as a striking silver line curving beneath one eye and across his muzzle. He’s nothing more than an animal when like this; feral, dangerous and uncaring of what gets destroyed in his path. It could probably be a valuable asset if he had any idea how to properly control it. Unfortunately, his knowledge about himself is anyone’s guess, and he prefers to pretend it doesn’t exist.
Personality Description: To strangers, Kai comes across as passive and occasionally awkward; leftover quirks from his years of slavery. He is serious at a first glance and gives the impression of being solemn and uncaring, but beneath the surface lays an ultimately inquisitive soul hidden by decades of discipline. He keeps a firm hold of his emotions by nature, and his time in the guild has only strengthened that hold. Not one for deep conversation and not book-smart in the slightest, Kai is a doer, not a thinker.
Despite his austere first impression, Kai does have a rebellious side and is determined, prone to acting impulsively and confident in himself, with a knack for escape. In a pinch on a mission? Kai’s your man. His headstrong nature only worsens towards the full moon – at this time of month his animalistic side shines through at its best. While by no means a loud or sociable person, he’s full of pride in his own abilities, always ready to prove his worth when the need arises.
On the flip side of the coin, around those he really trusts (and Pari, in particular) his guard comes down and he can be playful, bold and spirited when he wants to be. While his job as Guardian is pretty much a full time commitment, when at rest his curiosity often gets the better of him. Kai is – quite literally - almost like a wild animal. You never quite know what to expect from him.
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
History:
Kai was born to the Brivido Wolf Clan on one of the small, drifting glacial islands on the very outskirts of Ísing, just far enough from the freezing desert to sustain life. His mother was a wolf demon but his father had been human, he knew, a sailor shipwrecked on the shores of the Frigid Continent. Life was harsh, made harsher still for the young half-demon. Often struggling to keep up with the Clan, it was no surprise that when, years later, more ships appeared on the horizon, the nine year old Kai found himself utterly alone.
Upon rowing to shore and finding nothing but the shivering boy, the sailors dragged him back on board, scrutinising is pale skin, blue eyes and fluffy ears. Kai found himself in shackles having done nothing but stutter the few words he knew in Common, and before he knew it they were sailing back for the Xyndi Empire. At first the change in temperature was welcome after the freezing wastes, but by the time they reached the small province of Dibos Kai was sweaty and dehydrated, unable to cope with the heat. (He still has a low tolerance of it to this day).
Sold almost instantly to a fighting pit, the half-demon’s adolescence was filled with savage training and regular beatings, though he didn’t actually begin to fight until the age of fifteen. After that, his world was a scorching routine – up at dawn, fight, lick wounds, sleep. Rinse and repeat. Occasionally he would attempt escape, but as the years passed without even a hint of success, Kai stopped bothering.
When he was forty-four years old, Pari Kashani’s father came for him. He remembers little about the journey to the Umayyad Mountains, but everything about the man who had bought him from the fighting pits. He was stern at a first glance, but his eyes were kind, and he spoke to Kai often as they travelled – not something he was used to. He had watched the half-demon fight whenever he was in Dibos, he said, and he seemed perfect for a job in his flourishing guild. Savage and unrefined were exactly what the Sand Snakes were looking for, apparently. Kai hardly knew what a guild was, and remained quiet and tight lipped on their journey, but soon enough the colossal mountain range appeared and he was home.
Home, of course, didn’t feel that way for decades. When he wasn’t training or learning to properly speak and follow orders, Kai was charged with watching over some squalling girl child, a responsibility he was ill-prepared for. Something was supposed to be after the girl, he was told, but Kai hadn’t seen anything more dangerous than a few bandits in his time at the guild so far. Part playmate, part protector, Kai probably learned more from the young Pari Kashani than she ever would from him. But the elder Kashani had been right, and something was after her. And when it came, Kai ensured that it left the guild in pieces.
That fight took a heavy toll on the half-demon, earning him the scar on his face, but his victory earned him much more. Stronger and swifter than any human, Kai became one of the best weapons the Sand Snakes had in their arsenal and, fiercely protective of Pari after what had happened, it was no surprise that he developed a fondness for the girl. Since the ‘incident’ involving a freak desert storm and a lightning strike, Kai became more defensive of Pari than ever. He stuck close to her side even when she reached adulthood, and when her father died he was the first to back her claim to the rights of the guild. A Guardian of the guild and her personal guard dog, life with the Sand Snakes is never boring.
Likes/Dislikes:
Likes: The moon, peace and quiet, the greenhouses in the guild, high places, Pari, shade, cool air and the snow, but he can’t remember the last time he saw it.
Dislikes: The hot climate, storms, the desert, bandits, sand (it gets everywhere, even in the mountains), wearing shoes, loud noises and strong smells.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths: A mix of savagery from the fighting pit and discipline from the guild, Kai’s fighting style is erratic, but he has it down to a fine art. Quick, agile and able to use a variety of weapons with ease, he knows well how to defend himself and, given the opportunity, he isn’t afraid to play dirty either. His determination makes him hard to keep down, and he knows the guild and the Great Gigantii Desert (at least the areas nearest the border) like the back of his hand. He also has a knack for escape, and there’s a certain kind of cunning about him when the situation calls for it. Also, thanks to his demonic heritage, his sense of smell, sight and hearing are very acute, and his strength and speed are beyond what the average human might expect.
Weaknesses: Kai’s most prominent weakness is his aversion to the arid temperature. No matter how long he has been in the Xyndi Empire, Kai has never managed to fully acclimatise to the heat. While this usually isn’t an issue in the mountain pass where the guild is located and the air is cooler, on desert missions he is often lethargic, and has to work hard to keep up. Also, his pale skin easily burns from the sun, which is unpleasant to say the least if he forgets to cover up.
The heat aside, Pari Kashani is Kai’s biggest weakness. He has been charged with her protection practically since her birth, and still takes his job seriously (though she hardly needs it by now). In fact, over the last couple of years, since the lightning incident especially, he might have fallen a little bit in love with her, but it’s not something he admits to himself, let alone anyone else.
His acute sense of smell and hearing, too, are as much weaknesses as strengths. A strong smell, such as that of a dye, can overpower him and screw up his senses, or even knock him out if shoved right under his nose. Loud noises can startle him, and if persistent or too high, they render him helpless with a piercing headache. Finally, while Kai has had a long time to accustom himself to life at the guild, he still occasionally has a slave’s awkwardness. With people of authority, especially, he rarely knows how to act or what to say.
Weapons/Armor/Magic:
While Kai shows proficiency in a variety of blades and heavy weaponry, and has keen accuracy with a bow and arrow, he still prefers to use his fists. His main weapons are teeth, nails, and any other body part he’s able to use to get the job done, but on desert missions he has taken to carrying two long, curved daggers, just to be on the safe side. He only wears light armour under his clothes, and only when inside the guild. Out in the desert it slows him down and is far too hot, and he’d prefer no armour to passing out. (Hell, it took long enough for them to get him to wear the uniform, and he still resents the shoes). Any magic that Kai might have learned in the glaciers from his mother has since been forgotten, so he is unskilled in that department.
